Recap: Coldwater softball and Bronson split DH; Quincy falls in finals at Mendon

BRONSON – The Bronson Viking softball team played host to their neighbors just east on M-60 as they welcomed the Coldwater Cardinals to town for a softball twin bill this past Friday.

The teams split the games, with Bronson taking game one while Coldwater came back to take game two.

Game one saw Bronson take the win by the score of 3-2.

Ashlynn Harris was the winning pitcher for Bronson, throwing all seven innings while allowing two unearned runs with six hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Kaitlynn Scare led the Bronson effort at the plate, going 1 for 2 with a single.

Game two of the doubleheader saw Coldwater take the win by the score of 6-0.

Coldwater used a huge five run fifth inning to put the win away, led by Mya Porter who smacked a two-run single

Mya Webb took the loss on the mound for Bronson after throwing four innings, allowing five hits and four runs with three walks and five strikeouts.

Ashlynn Harris led the hit brigade for Bronson, going 2 for 3 with two singles while Roni Bir added a 2 for 3 effort with two singles. Lydia Wells chipped in a single.

Coldwater’s individual stats were not made available by press time.

“It was good that we were able to bounce back after last night,” Bronson coach Becky Gray said. “It was a much better effort all around. We still have a lot to work on, but I was happy with our energy and effort.”

With the split Bronson improves to 8-7 on the season with their next action coming Tuesday when they face Union City.

Quincy softball splits weekend tournament run

MENDON – The Quincy Orioles finished 1-1 at Saturday’s Mendon Invite, taking a win over Eau Claire before falling in the finals to Mendon.

In their first tournament game it was Quincy rolling past Eau Claire 18-3.

Quincy out hit Eau Claire 13-1 in the victory, led by Miley Pointdexter who continued her phenomenal freshman campaign going 2 for 2 with two walks, four RBIs and four runs scored.

Hannah Brown took the win on the mound for Quincy, throwing three innings while allowing only one hit with three earned runs and nine walks.

Deziray Skirka and Mickala Feltner each had a double while Kaylee Modert and Payton Gross notched triples.

Josie Mescher finished the day going 2 for 2 with four RBIs while Skirka added a 2 for 3 effort with three RBIs and four runs.

Also knocking in runs for Quincy was Gross with two; Alyssa McCavit with one; Modert with two; and Feltner with two.

Game two saw Quincy fall in the finals to the host team from Mendon 7-2.

Mendon jumped on Quincy quickly, scoring three runs in the first on their way to seven unanswered runs. The Orioles finally were able to get a few runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late as the Hornets took the win.

Danika Skirka took the loss on the mound for Quincy after throwing seven innings in the loss, allowing five hits and seven runs, three earned, with four walks and five strikeouts. Skirka also added a triple at the plate in the tough loss.

Payton Gross, Alyssa McCavit and Skirka all had hits for Quincy, while Feltner and Skirka each drove in runs.
