The Real Reason 'Grey's Anatomy' Isn't on Tonight

Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey on 'Grey's Anatomy'

Sorry, Grey's Anatomy fans. There is no new episode of the hospital drama tonight, April 18. In fact, Grey's is on hiatus until May 2. Instead, ABC is using the TGIT lineup to re-air the three-part cruise disaster that kicked off the latest season of 9-1-1.

It may feel like the show is going on hiatus just as new episodes are getting started, but this is to be expected. Shows were rushed into production in late 2023 to make up time from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in the summer. Shows across the broadcast scope are now taking time off to catch up before the run of episodes leading up to their finales. In a normal TV season, this would be like the holiday break from early December until January.

Do not fret though, Grey's Anatomy will return in two weeks. What to expect when it does? According to the official episode description from ABC, "Mika and Teddy receive a patient from a nearby penitentiary. Catherine pushes back on Link and Monica’s treatment plan for a VIP. Bailey tries to integrate wellness into the residency program." Monica (Natalie Morales) is the new pedes surgeon so that gives us some clues about who Catherine's VIP patient is. It also means that we'll get to spend some more time with the mysterious new staff member.

Outside of patient drama, we can't wait to find out what happens with Mika (Midori Francis) and Helm (Jaicy Elliott) now that Mika knows Helm blocked her from a very cool case. Lucas (Niko Terho) and Simone (Alexis Floyd) also need to talk about their relationship after falling asleep together at the end of the last episode. Wait, are we starting to really care about the interns now?

It will also be great to see Teddy (Kim Raver) back in the OR because she's had too much time to micromanage people otherwise, and she is one of the best heart surgeon instructors Grey Sloan has ever seen. Never forget she mentored Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh)! Let's just hope that Catherine's (Debbie Allen) return to the hospital doesn't mean she's closer to figuring out that Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) are doing secret Alzheimer's research behind her back.

Ah, there's so much drama we need to get back to. In the meantime, all episodes of Grey's Anatomy are now streaming on Hulu.
