Reagan County's Kason Brown highlights the 2024 All-West Texas boys basketball teams

The 2023-24 boys basketball season ended with multiple Concho Valley and San Angelo area teams making deep playoff runs, with both Irion County and Robert Lee making trips to the regional tournament.

Regardless of team success, plenty of outstanding area athletes had stellar seasons. Here is a look at the Standard-Times' 2023-24 All-West Texas boys basketball teams.

Most Valuable Player

Kason Brown, jr., Reagan County

The back-to-back District 7-2A MVP is fresh off a season averaging 25 points and eight rebounds while leading the Owls to a regional quarterfinal appearance. His 25 points per game led all players in West Texas and helped lead Reagan County to another outright District 7-2A title and the No. 4 spot in the TABC Rankings by the start of the postseason. Trailing 43-24 in the fourth quarter against New Home in the regional quarterfinal, Brown scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to bring the Owls within one point before the Leopards pulled out a tight win 59-51. He also surpassed 2,000 career points earlier in the season and was a TABC All-Region selection.

Offensive Player of the Year

Augden Hallmark, sr., Wall

Hallmark finished the season as the Hawks' leading scorer, averaging 17 points per game while adding 3.5 rebounds and one assist per contest. For his efforts, he was named District 6-3A Co-MVP after helping to lead Wall to a 10-2 district record, which earned a share of the district title. In the postseason, Hallmark increased his scoring average to 21 points per game and vaulted the Hawks into a regional quarterfinal game against No. 18 Wichita Falls City View where they lost 63-62 on a controversial last-second shot. Hallmark also earned TABC All-Region honors.

Drew Sherrill, sr., TLCA San Angelo

Sherill was the leading scorer for the Eagles who finished the season with a 26-7 overall record and a 12-2 District 6-3A record. The Co-District MVP and TABC All-Region honoree averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and two assists per game while leading TLCA San Angelo to a bidistrict championship win 85-50 over Comfort.

Defensive Player of the Year

Kollin Allbright, sr., San Angelo Central

The District 2-6A first-team selection was the defensive leader and anchor for the Bobcats, who finished as the second seed in District 2-6A behind No. 25 Frenship. In his final season, Allbright averaged 12.8 points, seven rebounds and one assist while holding opposing players below 35% shooting. The Angelo State commit helped lead the Bobcats to their first bidistrict championship 73-65 over El Paso Franklin since 2011-2012.

Newcomer of the Year

Braylon White, soph., Lake View

White burst onto the scene for a young Lake View squad made up of mostly underclassmen. In his first season on varsity, White led the Chiefs in scoring at 15.1 points per game on 57% shooting and rebounding with 5.3 per game.

Talmadge Taylor, soph., San Angelo Central

Taylor earned District 2-6A Newcomer of the Year after averaging 11.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists. As the year progressed, he became an integral part of Central's offense and defense and was the focal point in the Bobcats bidistrict win over El Paso Franklin.

Coach of the Year

Steven Hayes, Robert Lee

In his second season as the Steers' head coach, Hayes turned the Robert Lee boys basketball program from a team that finished fourth in District 11-A to a squad that finished the season with a 26-10 record. He led Robert Lee to its first regional tournament since 1995 by beating district rival Garden City 45-31 in the regional quarterfinal game.
