Ready to trick or treat? We have the times and places you need to know

Halloween is creeping up, and there are lots of opportunities in Ames, Story County and Boone County to break out your favorite costume.

The kids can head out to trick or treat in many area citywide events and business-district celebrations.

For adults, there’s a zombie bar crawl, bowling alley party and several bars getting into the spirit of the season.

There’s even a costume opportunity for the family dog.

Here’s a list of what we found going on in the area:

Camelot Theater is showing a classic horror movie

See the classic scary movie “Poltergeist” at the Camelot Theater in Nevada at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Admission is $5 and concessions will be available for purchase.

Ames Haunted Forest is open Friday and Saturday

Ames Haunted Forest will be open from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $25. The Haunted Forest is located near Hilton Coliseum and Jack Trice Stadium, east of University Boulevard at 1400 S. Fourth St.

Dress your dog to compete for best costume

Rovers at Reiman Howl-O-Ween Costume Walk is a new event this year at Reiman Gardens. Costumed pups and their owners are welcome from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31. Dogs will be admitted for $5. Advance tickets are not required. Reiman Gardens will host a photoshoot between 4:30 and 6 p.m., and photos will be posted on social media the next day. Users will be able to vote for their favorite costumes.

Lace up your roller skates and compete for best costume

Halloween Late Skate Costume Party will be held from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at Spinning Wheels roller skate rink in Ogden. Costumes are encouraged and there will be prizes for categories such as best and scariest. Spinning Wheels is located at 408 W. Division St. in Ogden.

Zombie Crawl is for adults only

The first Zombie Crawl is coming to Ames from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday. Dress in your most undead attire. Each bar is serving drinks exclusive for ghouls, ghosts and the undead. Participating bars include The Angry Irishmen, London Underground, Della Viti, Whiskey River, Time Out, Sweet Caroline’s Kitchen & Cocktails and Sam’s Place. There will be an afterparty at The Angry Irishmen from 12-1 a.m. with a karaoke and costume contest for the most frightening zombie.

Time Out hosts two nights of Halloween parties

The Halloween Party: Night One at Time Out will start at 8 p.m. Friday. Night Two will start at 8 p.m. Saturday. There will be karaoke, a costume contest and other spooky and yummy treats.

Alluvial features band, encourages handmade costumes

A Handmade Haunting will be held at Alluvial Brewing Company from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday. The band Wiitch Tiit will perform. Wear costumes — the more handmade, the better. Feel free to bring snacks to share. No admission charge.

Sports Bowl in Nevada features costumes and karaoke

Spooktacubowl at Sports Bowl in Nevada is at 8 p.m. Saturday. Call to reserve your spot, 515-382-2500. There will be moonlight bowling, karaoke and a costume party. The event will feature Crash Karaoke & DJ and is an 18+ party.

Angry Irishmen hosts metalcore bands

A Halloween Affair with Orphic Illusion and Saving Sidon will begin at 10 p.m. Friday at The Angry Irishmen. Doors open at 9 p.m. and there’s a $5 cover. Costumes are encouraged. There will be specialty drinks and Halloween candy. Orphic Illusion and Saving Sidon are metalcore bands.

Citywide and downtown trick-or-treating

  • Downtown Ames: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27

  • Ames citywide: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • North Grand Mall: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30 is the mall’s Malloween Truck or Treat event. Free candy, books, activities and fun to be had by all. All ages welcome.

  • Somerset Trick-or-Treat: Wednesday, Oct. 25, 4 to 5:30 p.m. Businesses in Somerset will have their doors open, offering treats and games.

  • Wheatsfield Co-op: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Bring the kiddos for Wheatsfield’s eighth annual Trick-or-Treat at the Co-op. Trick-or-treat stations will be set up all around the store with plenty of goodies. Costumes are encouraged.

  • Hy-Vee: 640 Lincoln Way in Ames, 3800 Lincoln Way in Ames, and 1111 Eighth St. in Boone. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 is Hy-Vee’s annual Trick-Or-Treat party with cookie decorating, coloring and pumpkin decorating. Don't forget to wear your costumes.

  • Boone: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • Cambridge: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • Collins: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30. Be sure to stop by Collins Fire & Rescue for candy for the kids. They’ll also have hot dogs, apple cider and coffee for a free-will donation.

  • Colo: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • Gilbert: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • Hickory Grove Park: 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Breezy Bay Campground, Hickory Grove Park.

  • Huxley: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • Madrid: Monday, Oct. 30, 6 to 8 p.m.

  • Maxwell: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • McCallsburg: 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31

  • Nevada: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31

  • Downtown Nevada: Main Street Nevada is hosting trick-or-treating at local businesses from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. This year's theme is ‘80s Halloween. Make sure to check out the haunted carwash at the corner of 6th and I Avenue. There will be a Mini Haunted House Contest similar to gingerbread houses. Costume contests: Best Family or Group Costume, Best 80's Costume, Best spirit (cubs) costume, Best Pet Costume. Be at the intersection of 6th and K at 6:30 p.m. for costume judging.

  • Roland: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31. Stop into the fire station during trick or treat to play games and grab prizes from the Roland American Legion Auxiliary

  • Sheldahl: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.

  • Slater: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31. Trick or Treat parade is at 1:30 p.m. on Main Street.

  • Story City: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.

  • Downtown Story City: 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26. Includes Touch a Truck event.

  • Bethany Life in Story City: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.

  • Zearing: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Walking tacos will be served at Dakins Community Center for a free-will donation.
