Vogue Defends Kim and Kanye's Baby Name
But maybe there was more truth to that story than we thought.
Yesterday evening, Vogue.com published what felt like a pretty un-Vogue op-ed defending the much-maligned name. "A Girl Named North? Why Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's Baby Name Isn't That Unusual" was written by Dalton Conley, an NYU professor and author of the bookParentology. Conley is also known for naming his children E, a girl and Yo Xing Heyno Augustus Eisner Alexander Weiser Knuckles, a boy (those are both first names by the way).
For some reason, he thinks that since he has named his own children even more..er..unconventional names, he is in a position to defend Kim and Kanye's decision to name their baby girl North West. He tries to make a few arguments for why Kimye didn't create any problems for their daughter by naming her that. First: that they had to name her something unusual because they're celebrities, using Moon Unit Zappa and Apple Paltrow as examples of a "long tradition of celebrities marking their status by giving atypical names to their children." (Might as well have thrown Blue Ivy in there.)
His second argument is that it's due to "the rise of unique black names" because Kanye West is black, and thus had to follow this sociological pattern (he uses statistics to back this up).
That seems to be all he's got, as he then talks about his own kids some more.
Overall, it's by far the strangest and seemingly out-of-place article we've read on Vogue.com. Why are they addressing Kim and Kanye's baby in the first place? Why did they choose this guy to do it? Why are we even less convinced that North West is a nice name than we were before? Is Anna really just trying to save face? Can we expect more of these kinds of articles on Vogue.com?
All we know is that the name North West is now officially Vogue-approved.
