Mani Monday: Clinique's Nail Polish for Sensitive Skin

You touch your eyes about 200 times a day. And since nail polish can be an allergen source–one that can even cause dermatitis (a rash)–Clinique has decided to launch the first nail polish especially for folks with sensitive skin. Apparently this happens more often than you think: You get a mani, rub your eyes, and a few hours later a rash appears.

The line is called (somewhat awkwardly) A Different Nail Enamel for Sensitive Skins, and includes a 12 color permanent collection and a limited edition color collection for summer 2013. The permanent collection is full of classic pinks and reds, and even Black Honey, Clinique's cult fave lip color. The summer collection is loaded with brights and neons, and one metallic silver polish. Polishes go for $16 a pop and are available now.

A lot of polish brands are now marketed as "3 Free," meaning they don't contain dibutyl phthalate (DBP), formaldehyde and toluene, which are known nasty substances that can cause allergic reactions and even cancer. Clinique doesn't specifically say whether or not the polishes contain these chemicals, but does assert that the formula will "minimize" allergic reactions. It took them six years to develop it and it's been tested by both dermatologists and ophthalmologists.

Since an allergy to nail polish is thankfully not something I suffer from (otherwise I would be covered in a head-to-toe rash on a daily basis), I guess I never thought about the need for a collection like this. But regardless of your sensitive skin status, it was smart for Clinique to re-enter the nail lacquer arena (it's years since Clinique had a nail polish line) and get a piece of that very lucrative pie.
