Kate Upton channels Marilyn Monroe on Vanity Fair's 100th anniversary issue
In his editor letter, Vanity Fair's editor Graydon Carter spoke about how far they've come while holding on to the magazine's original ideals: "Today's magazine is different in countless ways from yesterday's-as even the briefest excursion through this issue will show. But I like to think that if [Vanity Fair's first editor] Frank Crowninshield ... could see the modern Vanity Fair, stripped of its logo and other identifying marks, he'd know in an instant what he held in his hands."
The issue includes Kate Upton blowing out the 100th anniversary candle, captured by the unparalleled Annie Leibovitz, as well as a recreation of the original cover from October 1, 1913.
During Upton's interview for the cover story, she told V.F. that the beginning of her career certainly wasn't easy: "one agency told me, 'You're too American, and everybody knows American women are lazy.' I was so offended!" With Upton's huge success, we're sure that agency is feeling just a little bit of regret now!
