Elizabeth Hurley explains the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Actress Elizabeth Hurley has been a leader in raising awareness and support for breast cancer research and awareness. As a cause close to her heart, Elizabeth teamed up with "The Estée Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign." The campaign has committed to raising more than $5 million for education, awareness, support, and more.

StyleList sat down with Elizabeth Hurley, the campaign's spokesperson to find out more about this great cause and why it's so important.

StyleList (SL): Why have you devoted so much time and compassion to this cause?
Elizabeth Hurley (EH): Just after I started as an Estée Lauder model in 1995, Evelyn Lauder asked me to help her with The Estée Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign, and we became good friends. My grandmother had recently died of breast cancer, so it was a cause very close to my heart. This is a disease that knows no boundaries and does not discriminate, touching everyone in every country around the world. I am passionately dedicated to this cause, and will continue to spread the word about early dedication and the importance of breast health globally.

SL: Why is it important for people to support this cause?
EH: The BCA Campaign's theme this year is "Let's Defeat Breast Cancer. We're Stronger Together." Our mission is to accelerate the global breast cancer movement and focus more on definitive actions that we can take together to help create a world without breast cancer.

It is important to take positive action to create a future of breakthroughs in education and medical research. Since its inception in 1992, The BCA Campaign has raised more than $48 million to support research, education and medical services globally; $38 million of which has funded 152 Breast Cancer Research Foundation® (BCRF) research projects worldwide in the past 20 years.

SL: What advice do you have for young women looking to get involved?
EH: No matter the age, woman or man, everyone can get involved in their own way. This October, we will be using social media and key partnerships to inspire action and provide a global social experience that will invite people from all around the world to create their own "Circles of Strength" comprised of friends, family, co-workers and loved ones to rally around any action - large or small - that could advance us toward eradicating breast cancer all together.

SL: Who inspires you to continue your advocacy?
EH: I'm inspired by the women and men I meet throughout the year who have breast cancer or have a close family member or friend who has been affected.

In many areas of the world, awareness lags dangerously far behind, and stigma and access to quality care remain critical issues. Even with extensive education, many women fail to have potentially life-saving mammograms, eat healthy foods or get sufficient rest and exercise. It is important that we join together to encourage women to keep talking about this among themselves and with their doctors.

On a personal level, it is extremely rewarding to work on The BCA Campaign, and I know that my grandmother would be very proud to see me carry out Evelyn's mission by serving as a voice for breast health and early detection.
