Apparently, Fashion People Hate their Jobs

Desperate for a job in fashion? You may want to rethink that. Fashion and retail employees are increasingly dissatisfied with their jobs, according to a recent study.

And not only that, but they're also less satisfied with their life/work balance and more likely to be looking for other employment.

The study, reports WWD, was put out by 24 Seven, a New York-based talent recruitment firm. According to its results, only 48% of people in fashion and retail said they were satisfied with their jobs and 86% said they were at least open to new job opportunities, if not actively looking.

Working in fashion, it's not uncommon to hear people complain about their jobs. And job turnaround is pretty fast. But we imagine the same to be true of other professional fields. At least fashion is kind of fun, right? Wrong (we guess).

So why are its workers so miz? According to the report, part of it is due to after-effects of the recession. Although pay has improved–average compensation rose 6% last year–the job market is changing. "It's a very disruptive time in the industry, and with consolidation and the shift towards e-commerce, workers see fewer opportunities," said Celeste Gudas, president of 24 Seven.

Of course, certain types of businesses were found to have happier workers than others–those businesses being e-commerce and luxury, which makes sense given that those industries thrived the most following the recession. Satisfaction was lowest among employees of lifestyle brands.

And if you're not working for an e-commerce or luxury goods company, it sounds like freelancing is the way to go. According to the study, freelancers had a better work/life balance, more so than the year before. Additionally, freelancers are in greater demand, according to the executives surveyed. We knew Lauren was onto something!

Perhaps this helps explain some of the recent industry shakeups.
