When it comes to our face, we don't trust just anyone to give us the lowdown on what our skin needs to survive a grueling winter. Instead, we turn to the experts. And our favorite dermatologist, Dr. Gervaise Gerstner, knows what it takes to keep our skin glowing strong. Here are her pro tips for keeping your complexion in superior shape.
- Apply Moisturizer in Damp Air
When the air is dry (so, pretty much all winter long), it zaps moisture from wherever it can, and that means the air is actually stealing moisture straight from your skin. If you get in the habit of applying moisturizer
right after a warm shower, the humidity in the air will allow your skin to soak up all the moisture, making the score: Your skin: 1. The environment: 0.
- Apply Lotion Before Bed
Your skin does most of its repair work overnight, when it's not battling natural elements. You can give your complexion an assist with creams that help hydrate and speed up cell turnover while you sleep. We're sort of obsessed with this overnight mask

- Layer Your Lotions

- Wear More Cotton
This one breaks our hearts a little bit -- we love sweater weather, but Gerstner's suggestion is to "avoid cashmere and wool because they are allergens and exacerbate eczema." Instead, she says to wear cotton, which is more calming to the skin and generally less irritating. The good news -- you can always layer cotton under your sweaters to avoid irritation.
- Skip Fat-Free Foods
"We need fat!" says Gerstner. "Skin gets too dry if we don't eat enough fat in our diets." Don't get it twisted: This doesn't mean you can binge on cookies and cake. But you should try to pack your diet with foods that replenish the good fats -- think olive oil, avocado and nuts. Another healthy-fat food is salmon; the fish is rich in omega-3s, a fatty acid known for keeping skin glowy and moist.
- Soothe Your Scalp With Hair Oil
Though you don't often think of your scalp as part of your epidermis, it is, which means that it needs the same TLC as the rest of your skin. A leave-in oil treatment
might sound scary, but it's one of the best ways to help soothe an itchy scalp. A formula that's nongreasy and instant-absorbing is your best bet to help prevent your hair from actually appearing oily. Bonus: It will help tame flyaways (winter and static are practically synonymous!) and add shine.
- Use Moisture-Rich Foundation
