Read the Supreme Court decision in NC’s nationally watched elections case

In a decision Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to endorse a theory backed by North Carolina Republicans that state courts shouldn’t be allowed to strike down state lawmakers’ actions on federal elections.

A mix of liberal and conservative justices agreed on the case. Below you can read the opinion by Chief Justice John Roberts, in which he was joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson. (Kavanaugh also wrote separately in a concurring opinion.)

Three conservative justices dissented. You can read Justice Clarence Thomas’s dissenting opinion, which Justice Neil Gorsuch joined and Justice Samuel Alito joined in part.
