Rat and Pit Bulls' Unlikely Friendship Is Straight-Up Out of Disney

Do you have pets that most people wouldn't think could be friends? Zeus is big brother to Kronos, two adorable Pit Bulls who are always together. Their parents shared a video in mid-July of the two of them hanging out with their bestie, a rat named Remi. Talk about an unlikely friendship!

Zeus is a full-grown Pit Bull, while Kronos looks like he's still a puppy. The two are sitting on the couch when Remi shows up on the coffee table and hops over to the couch to hang out with the dogs. The two pooches are so gentle with the rat! They even lick his fur and snuggle up with him!

This is not a friendship that I'd expect to see. I can't get over how gentle Zeus and Knonos are with Remi. We have a dog and a pet bunny, and the only thing our dog ever wants to do is try to eat the rabbit! I wish they could hang out like these three besties.

Commenters didn't see this as cute or healthy for the rat, though. People were angry that the pooches' parents had just one pet rat and recommended they get another. They left long comments about why Zeus' parents are wrong to let the dogs near the rat. People had strong feelings about it! @ndpugs had the best response to all the haters, "Oh thank Christ we found a rat expert. I was worried about the wellbeing of this clearly happy rat."

Can Rats Bond with Other Animals?

I was really curious about who was right on the argument that rats need to be with other rats. Another Pet Helpful article confirmed that rats are social and do need companions around, "Just like people, rats need constant social interaction to remain happy and in high spirits. Paired rats will eventually form a lifelong bond and become almost inseparable from one another. And while your pets will always love you, they will be able to provide comfort for one another that you simply cannot." It goes on to say, "When amongst members of their own kind, rats tend to feel more at ease with their surroundings."

This makes sense, but do they need to be with other rats or can they get along with other animals? According to Zoo Nerdy, yes they can have friends of all kinds, "Rats can coexist with other small animals, such as hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits. They can form bonds with these animals and groom each other. Rats can also live with birds and reptiles, but it requires caution and supervision. Dogs and cats can also coexist with rats, but it depends on their temperament and behavior."

I'm not sure if there's a right or wrong answer to this, but it's pretty clear to me that the rat is fine living with and being friends with the dogs. Clearly the dogs' temperaments allow them to accept the rat, and vice versa. It may not work out like this in every home, but it's obvious that it works at Zeus and Kronos' house!
