Ranking Miami Dolphins undrafted rookies who can make an impact after 2024 NFL Draft

MIAMI GARDENS — The best NFL teams hit on the occasional undrafted free agent.

And the Miami Dolphins have had some recent success with UDFA's.

Consider cornerbacks Kader Kohou (Texas A&M-Commerce), Nik Needham (UTEP) and guard Robert Jones (Middle Tennessee) are three solid undrafted contributors.

Running back Chris Brooks (BYU), tight end Julian Hill (Campbell) and cornerback Ethan Bonner (Stanford) have all proven worthy of developing.

“It’s the collaboration, and that’s always been very important," Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said this week. "Over the years, we’ve done well there. I think that’s the scouts and coaches. They put a lot of time into it. This isn’t something everyone is just getting together right now at the end of the draft. This has been going on for weeks of the scouts communicating and talking with Mike (McDaniel) and I and going through it."

The Dolphins were going to have a hard time bringing in undrafted players at positions with depth, for example, running back and receiver.

But agents are smart enough to realize Miami has some potential depth holes at, for example, guard and safety. And that's why you saw Miami sign a few notable players in those positions.

Here are six of the more intriguing undrafted players Miami has signed.

We won't be surprised if a few of these players make a roster, and a few more end up on Miami's practice squad in 2024:

Matthew Jones, Ohio State, Guard

Jones can play guard and center. He's broad and aggressive. He's a Brooklyn native and former defensive tackle who spent six seasons with the Buckeyes due to redshirting and COVID. Jones should be squarely in the mix of competition with Dolphins like Lester Cotton, Chasen Hines and, who knows, maybe even Liam Eichenberg.

Mark Perry, TCU, Safety

Perry, a Californian who attended Colorado and TCU, has all the physical tools and is tough on the field. Perry will need to show out in training camp to the make the roster. He's competing with players like Elijah Campbell, a strong special teamer, and perhaps the likes of Ethan Bonner and Nik Needham. But the only pure safeties on Miami's roster at the moment are Jevon Holland and Jordan Poyer, so there's a chance.

Storm Duck, Louisville, Cornerback

Obviously, Storm Duck is going to make Miami's roster. The man is named Storm Duck. OK, OK, so it won't be that simple. Duck has good size but - go figure - not blazing speed. According to The Athletic, Duck was named after a soap opera character. Duck spent the first four seasons of his career at North Carolina. He posted five college interceptions. His competition would seem to be the likes of Needham and Bonner.

Grayson Murphy, UCLA, Edge

Scouts say Grayson is a solid pass rusher despite shorter arms. He's more of a rotational pass rusher than run stopper. His twin brother, Gabriel, signed with Minnesota as an undrafted free agent. They spent the first three years of their career at North Texas. Grayson had 8.5, 5 and 5 sacks in his last three college seasons. Was penalized nine times last season.

Isaiah Johnson, Syracuse, Safety

Johnson played cornerback at Syracuse but is projected as a safety at the next level. He did not run a very good 40-yard dash (4.64) but he has good size and can tackle. His pathway could be through special teams, though he may need to start out on special teams. He's depth behind a safety-corner player like Elijah Campbell. Perhaps he'll flash at safety. Johnson lived in Switzerland for five years via The Athletic. A skilled sketch artist, he began his career at Dartmouth.

Bayron Matos, USF, Offensive Tackle

Matos is the definition of developmental project. But my goodness is he fascinating. Matos is a 6-foot-7, 313-pound basketball player from the Dominican Republic. He never took a snap in a college football game. He was once a 90-miles-per-hour pitcher. Matos needs to get stronger and develop technique. But what an interesting story.
