Raleigh police say 13-year-old girl found dead of gunshot wound

ABC11

A 13-year-old girl was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound at a North Raleigh apartment complex early Monday, police said.

Officers responded at 2:36 a.m. to a report of a person shot in the 1900 block of North Hills Drive, just off the I-440 Beltline near its intersection with Glenwood Avenue.

The girl’s name will not be released due to her age, Lt. Jason Borneo said in a news release. The death investigation continues, and no suspects were in custody Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Raleigh Police Department at 919-996-3335 or visit Crimestoppers at www.raleighcrimestoppers.org.

Kimberly Muktarian, a family friend and advocate, said the girl had been struggling and that her mother had repeatedly sought help from Wake County, though she did not say what kind of help.

The family did not know why the girl had been out so late, said Muktarian, president of Save Our Sons consulting group.

“Certainly a lot of questions and devastation, to say the least,” she said. “She is just one that fell through the cracks.”

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
