Rain, snow mix in weather outlook for Binghamton, Southern Tier. Here's what’s coming.

Winter weather won’t loosen its grip on spring.

With the total solar eclipse in New York less than a week away, heavy showers, a wintry mix of snow, rain and sleet, along with high winds are in the forecast for the Binghamton area in the days leading up to the once-in-a-lifetime celestial event.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state is "closely monitoring a storm system that is expected to bring heavy snow, rain and gale force winds" to some areas.

A flood watch is in place until 10:15 p.m. Tuesday in most Southern Tier counties, including Broome, Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben. Allegany County is under a flood watch until 8 p.m.

Southern Tier residents, from Hornell to Binghamton, are in for a soaking.

Binghamton forecast: Plenty of rain, high winds, but little snow

The winter-like conditions start with rain, heavy at times, into Tuesday night, with wind gusts of 33 miles per hour possible and 55 mile per hour gusts on Wednesday, the Binghamton-based National Weather Service Office said.

Total precipitation expected from a storm system reaching the Southern Tier of New York state and northern Pennsylvania the first week of April 2024.

New York state officials warned of the potential power outages due to the wind.

Along with the heaviest wind gusts of the week, Wednesday is expected to bring heavy showers during the day, with rain and sleet transitioning into snow late Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Significant accumulation of snow is not expected in the Binghamton area, but the highest elevations of the Adirondacks and Catskills could see up to two feet of snow, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Delaware and Otsego counties and the northern half of Oneida County.

It’s more of the same on Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Rain and snow showers are in the forecast for both days and minor river flooding is possible on Thursday.

Storm expected to peter out over New England

High temperatures are expected to hover in the 40s through much of the week, with Tuesday’s high near 43, and highs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday reaching the low 40s.

The National Weather Service said precipitation will likely continue for the start of the weekend before the storm system stalls over New England.

The latest forecast for Monday's eclipse is mostly sunny with a high near 56 in Binghamton.
