Raiders GM Gives Carl Nassib Update After Jon Gruden’s Resignation
There were a lot of startling revelations in the leaked emails that led to Jon Gruden resigning as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Among them was a very hot take that has all eyes on Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib.
Gruden reportedly used a homophobic term in referencing the St. Louis Rams drafting Michael Sam – an openly gay NFL prospect – in 2014. Nassib, who came out as openly gay earlier this year, is one of the Raiders’ top defenders this season.
But Nassib could not be reached for comment at Raiders practice today. Raiders general manager Mike Mayock announced that Nassib has requested a personal day.
Mayock said that he spoke to Nassib three times since the emails were leaked. He said that Nassib is “processing a lot of things” but has the support of the team. Mayock did not mention the homophobic emails.

Carl Nassib joined the Raiders in 2020 after four solid years as a pass rushing defensive end with the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last year he started five of 14 games, recording 28 tackles, 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, nine QB hits and an interception.
Nassib came out as gay in June, during PRIDE, and also announced a $100,000 donation to The Trevor Project, assisting LGBTQ youth. He pledged to continue working to aid in the organization’s work.
In Week 1, Nassib became the first openly gay player to play a down in the NFL.
This season, Nassib has played in five games, appearing on about one-third of defensive snaps, and recording nine tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
