Races for Monroe County state representative positions shaping up

MONROE — General election races appear set in three of Monroe County's State House Districts, while the fourth will have a primary in August to determine the Republican nominee.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Jamie Thompson of Brownstown Township, who represents the 28th District, is being challenged in the Aug. 6 primary by Joe DeSana of South Rockwood and Beth Ann Socia of Flat Rock. Whomever emerges from that race will face Democrat Janise O'Neil Robinson of Brownstown Township in the general election on Nov. 5.

Thompson was elected to her first term in 2022.

The 28th District covers communities in Monroe and Wayne counties. The district includes portions of Frenchtown, Berlin, Rockwood and Brownstown townships, and the cities of Flat Rock, Taylor and Woodhaven.

The other candidates who filed by last week's deadline do not have primary opponents. In the 29th District, incumbent Republican Rep. Jim DeSana, R-Carleton, is headed toward a November matchup against Democrat Kyle Wright of Taylor.

DeSana was first elected to the House in 2022.

The district includes portions of Ash, Huron, Frenchtown and Monroe townships and portions of the cities of Monroe, Taylor and Romulus.

Incumbent Rep. William Bruck, R-Erie, is seeking his second term in the 30th District. The Democrat in the race is Rick Kull of Monroe.

The 30th District includes all of southern Monroe County, Monroe Charter Township and the city of Monroe. It also extends north to include Detroit Beach and west to include Ridgeway Township, Deerfield Township and part of Blissfield Township in Lenawee County.
