Screengrabs from Logan Kelsey MacNamara's Facebook video

A raccoon attacked a girl on her front porch and held on even as she repeatedly tried to kick it off, video from Connecticut shows.

The girl was standing outside with her backpack in Canterbury around 7:45 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, according to a Facebook video shared by Logan Kelsey MacNamara.

The girl screamed as the raccoon attacked her leg, the minute-long video shows. She took several steps back trying to get away, but the animal held on. Still screaming, she kicked repeatedly, trying to shake the raccoon off. It wouldn’t let go.

The girl’s mother rushed out of the house and grabbed the raccoon, the footage shows. She tried to pull the animal off the girl. The girl grabbed her mom for balance as she turned sideways and entirely upside down.

“Go inside!” the mom yelled in the video. Finally, she managed to pull the raccoon off her daughter.

The girl got to her feet and hurried inside, footage shows. The mom closed the door with one hand as the raccoon clung to her other arm.

The mom struggled to pull the raccoon off her arm as a dog barks in the background, the video shows. She attempted to throw the animal, but the raccoon held on.

“It’s a rabid raccoon,” she yelled to someone off camera before prying the raccoon off her arm and flinging it across the yard.

Immediately, the mom went back inside, video shows. The raccoon landed in the grass and scurried back toward the house, pausing in front of the landscaping before disappearing around the corner.

“We are headed to get checked out for rabies following this unprovoked raccoon attack,” MacNamara said. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of this brave girl.”

From the video, it’s unclear if the raccoon bit or scratched either person or if it was rabid. MacNamara did not immediately respond when McClatchy News asked her how she and her daughter were doing after the attack.

Canterbury is about 40 miles east of Hartford.
