Quincy girls takes second at Gobles Cross Country Little Guys Invitational

GOBLES – The Quincy Orioles and the Athens Indians made the trip to Gobles on Saturday to compete in the annual Little Guys Cross Country Invitational.

Quincy did not come away empty handed from their trip, as the Quincy girls finished with runner-up honors on the day, taking second place with 59 points. Gobles finished in first place at their home event, winning with a score of 54 points. Athens finished in eighth place with 197 points.

Quincy’s runner-up finish was paced by three top 10 finishes, and another inside the top 20. Leading the way for the Orioles was freshman Kendyl Musielewiez who crossed the line in fifth place overall in a time of 21 minutes, 33.37 seconds.

Also earning top 10 finishes for the Orioles was Brookelyn Parker, who finished sixth in 21:44.25, while Sadie Miller crossed the line in eighth place in 22:19.55.

Rounding out the Oriole scoring was Katharina Parchke in 15th place in 23:24.67 and Libby Butchart in 31st place in a time of 25:20.60.

Finishing up the Quincy effort was Elizabeth Craig in 33rd place; Peyton Procter in 35th place; Brooke McVicker in 38th; Danica Swift in 50th; Isabelle Marske in 62nd place; and Abby Miller in 68th place.

Athens was led on the day by Chloe Badger who finished in 19th place in a time of 23:58.60. Rounding out the Athens effort was Maria Bronsink, 36th in 26:10.36; Sarah Stemaly, 53rd in 28:30.03; Alexis Slater, 58th in 28:47.88; and Somyr Nye, 63rd in 29:53.48. Charley Williams also competed, taking 67th place.

In the boys' part of the competition, the Quincy squad did not field enough runners to qualify for the team standings, while Athens finished eighth with 182 points. Holland Black River took home championship honors with 27 points.

Quincy’s effort was led by sophomore Chayse Jensen, who finished seventh overall in 18:36.04. Rounding out the Orioles effort was Eddie Miller, 35th place in 21:04.54; Michael Payne, 38th in 21:16.94; and Nathan Richer, 39th in 21:23.35.

Athens was led by Ethan O’Connor, who finished 20th in 19:55.24. Rounding out the Athens scoring effort was Dru Slater, 40th place in 21:23.72; Addison Stanton in 55th place in 24:22.88; Carter Devold in 56th place in 24:39.36; and Gavin Thomas in 58th place in 24:50.00. Joseph Kinney also ran, taking 65th place.

Both teams will spend the week preparing for their respective MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) regional competition, with Quincy traveling to Ella Sharp Park in Jackson for the Division Three Regional on Friday while Athens while travel to Portage West Middle School on Friday for the Division Four Regional competition.
