Queen Camilla Chats With The Crown Actress Helena Bonham Carter

Back in March 2022, Camilla surprised everyone by inviting the actress who played her in The Crown to Clarence House and joking that her “fictional alter-ego” could take over if she could not finish her speech. And this evening, the Queen has hosted another actress from the hit Netflix show as Helena Bonham Carter attended reception at the London royal residence celebrating a poetry charity.

Queen Camilla was joined by supporters, friends, and beneficiaries of charity the Forward Arts Foundation this evening to celebrate 30 years of the organization. The charity promotes awareness, understanding, and enjoyment of poetry in the UK and Ireland and has celebrity supporters including Bonham Carter, who played Princess Margaret in series three and four of The Crown.

A video posted on social media by Daily Mail reporter Rebecca English showed the Queen chatting with Bonham Carter at the event, which was also attended by the UK’s Poet Laureate Simon Armitage.

The actress was also photographed curtseying to the Queen as they met:

Bonham Carter previously told the Guardian that she doesn’t think that The Crown should carry on in the present. "I’m in it and I loved my episodes, but it’s very different now. When The Crown started it was a historic drama, and now it’s crashed into the present. But that’s up to them,” she told the publication. The first episodes of the sixth season of the Netflix hit are set for release on November 16.

There has been much speculation as to whether members of the royal family watch The Crown and what they really think of it. When series four in 2020 covered Princess Diana’s struggles within the royal family, Clarence House disabled comments on its social media after Charles and Camilla were trolled. However, Camilla’s decision to invite the actress who played her, Emerald Fennell, to Clarence House in 2022 suggested she was not offended about the fallout.

“It was absolutely delightful, she is such an impressive person,” Fennell told reporters afterwards, adding that she thought Camilla had “been in the spotlight for a long time and has always weathered it with a lot of grace and good humor.” Admitting that it was “very strange” to be in Clarence house for the first time, Fennell joked, “I was nervous I might be thrown in the Tower. But so far so good.”
