Quarterfinals or bust! Live updates from the second round of the IHSA football playoffs

A total of 256 teams began the march to the IHSA state championships last week, but only half of those remain.

Illinois football's version of madness — the Illinois High School Association playoffs — continues Saturday for 128 teams spread across eight classes.

Four teams from the Tri-County area and 10 overall from the Journal Star area take the field Saturday. We will provide updates from all the games.

6:05 p.m. — Olympia off to the quarterfinals

The Spartans are in the Class 3A quarterfinals for the second consecutive season under former Morton coach Eric Lyons.

Olympia (9-2) defeated No. 6 Greenville 40-20 on the road to win a second-round game. The Spartans will host Roxana (11-0) in a quarterfinal next week.

5:05 p.m. — Washington moves on

The Panthers (10-1) will advance to the quarterfinals after a 21-0 home win over Crete Monee. Washington will travel to face Chatham Glenwood, a 52-51 winner over Oak Lawn Richards in overtime.

Washington had two playoff losses to Crete Monee over the last five years.

4:38 p.m. — Metamora loses shootout

The Metamora football season came to an end with a 41-36 loss to Highland on the road in a Class 5A second-round game.

4:30 p.m. — Washington starting to take control

Running back Kainon McQueary takes a screen pass 37 yards to house to give Washington a 14-0 lead over Crete Monee with 4:18 left in the third quarter.

After a tough first half, the floodgates are starting to open for the Panthers in the Class 6A second-round game.

4:11 p.m. — ROWVA well on its way to quarterfinals

The ROWVA/Williamsfield is headed to consecutive quarterfinals, leading unbeaten Stark County 36-8 late in a Class 1A second-round game.

If it holds on, ROWVA (9-2) would reverse a 24-14 result to Stark County from the regular season to move on.

3:54 p.m. — Scoreless at Washington

The battle of state-ranked Class 6A teams is just that — a battle.

No. 3 Washington is tied with No. 10 Crete Monee 0-0 with defense leading the way at Babcook Field. Washington has forced two turnovers and three punts, while CM has forced a fumble and four punts.

3:50 p.m. — ROWVA eyeing an upset

Host ROWVA/Williamsfield leads Stark County 16-8 at halftime of their Class 1A second-round game. Stark is unbeaten and ranked No. 6 statewide in 1A.

3:25 p.m. — Washington in a defensive struggle

Washington and Crete Monee are locked in a 0-0 game after one quarter at Babcook Field. Each team has three possessions, two ending with punts and one with a turnover.

3:20 p.m. — Farmington season ends

The Farmers (9-2) saw their season in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs with a 27-12 loss to state-ranked Bloomington Central Catholic. The Saints (11-0), No. 2 in Class 2A, move on to face No. 1-ranked Maroa-Forsyth.

3:15 p.m. — Metamora in a battle down south

The Redbirds are in a fight for their playoff lives. They trail Highland 20-13 at the half in their Class 5A second-round road game.

3:10 p.m. — Annawan/Wethersfield moving on

Annawan/Wethersfield gets a rushing touchdown from Zeb Rashid to take the lead in the third quarter and holds on for a 13-6 victory in a second-round game against Morrison.

The Titans are headed to the Class 1A quarterfinals against either Lena-Winslow or Forreston.

12:01 p.m. — Who's playing today?

Ten teams from the JS area will be in second-round games across the state: Washington, Metamora, Peoria Notre Dame, Farmington, Olympia, Princeton, Annawan/Kewanee Wethersfield, ROWVA/Williamsfield, Stark County and Monmouth-Roseville.
