Quaker Foundation to recognize three alumni and two New Philadelphia teachers at banquet

NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ The Quaker Foundation will honor three alumni and two New Philadelphia teachers at its annual recognition banquet, which will be Friday at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State University at Tuscarawas.

Scholarship awards will be presented to 85 members of the Class of 2024.

Alumni to be honored include:

Zoe Ann Soyars Kelley
Zoe Ann Soyars Kelley

Zoe Ann Soyars Kelly, who will receive the Alumnus of the Year for Lifetime Contribution Award. A 1956 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, she served 16 years as Dover city auditor before retiring in 2000. During her time as auditor, she was named as Woman of the Year by the American Association of University Women and was awarded the Kent State Tuscarawas Community Service Award. She served 38 years on the foundation board of Kent State Tuscarawas and served 37 years on the board of trustees for the Kent Tuscarawas campus.

Denise M. McEnroe-Petitte, who will receive the Alumnus of the Year for Special Achievement Award. A 1975 graduate of New Philadelphia High, her employment consisted of working at Aultman Hospital in Canton in the Coronary Care Unit, nurse manager at Union Hospital in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care and Stepdown Units, nurse manager for Cardiology Associates in Canton and then nursing faculty at Kent State University Tuscarawas in 1996. Recently, she was identified for being one of 33 professors at Kent State University recognized among the top 2% of scientists worldwide based on citations in 2022.

Dr. James D. Moore

Dr. James D. Moore, who will receive the Alumnus of the Year for Distinguished Service Award. He graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1982. He met his future wife, Dr. Lori Kuehne, at Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton. Drs. Moore and Kuehne returned to the area to open their family medicine practice in 1994. This took Dr. Moore back to the sidelines of New Philadelphia High School where he continues to care for athletes to this day. He remains active in the community including as an assistant scoutmaster for New Philadelphia Boy Scout Troop 84.

Christa Roberts

Rachelle Hughes and Christa Roberts have been selected as the 2024 winners of the Dr. William J. and Mae Hurst Jackson Award for Distinguished Teaching in the New Philadelphia City School District. Hughes is in her 14th year of teaching for New Philadelphia. Christa Roberts has taught there for 21 years.

Each winner is receiving a $6,000 monetary award.

A committee from the Quaker Foundation selected Hughes and Roberts as a finalist along with Shanna Lamb and Doug Smith. Lamb and Smith were selected as the 2024 runners-up for the Jackson Distinguished Teaching Award. Each runner-up is receiving a monetary award of $1,500.

Tickets to the event may be ordered with a donation of any amount by contacting the Quaker Foundation at 330-343-0100. Tickets will also be available for a donation of any amount at the door starting at 6 p.m. Desserts will be served at 6:30 with the awards program to follow at 7:30.
