Quadruple-double or 40 points?: Vote for Gastonia, Shelby basketball players of the week

Here are the Gastonia and Shelby area’s high school basketball player of the week nominees following play from Jan. 22-27.

Top performers lists and athlete of the week nominees are compiled from information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or game results and highlights posted to social media.

SHE GETS NUMBERS: South Point girls basketball following Amya Graham's lead, one double-double at a time

Boys basketball

  • Isaac Byers, Ashbrook: Averaged 22 points per game last week in wins over Hunter Huss and South Point. The Green Wave junior standout had 31 points in his team’s 78-64 win over South Point.

  • Cam Newman, Gaston Christian: Had 30.7 points, four rebounds and 7.3 assists as the Eagles earned victories over Gaston Day, SouthLake Christian and Westminster Catawba Christian.

  • King Rhodes, Crest: Averaged a double-double with 23.5 points and 11 rebounds per game last week in wins over Kings Mountain and Forestview.

  • Ty Sanders, North Lincoln: Averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists to help the Knights to wins over East Lincoln and Statesville.

  • Elijah Sherrill, Highland Tech: Averaged 20 points per game last week — including a 30-point performance against Sugar Creek — to go with 7.3 rebounds. The Rams won two of three games.

  • Trent Sherrill, East Gaston: Averaged 28 points per game as the Warriors defeated Bessemer City and fell in overtime to Highland Tech.

Girls basketball

  • Nevaeh Blackwell, Crest: Averaged 17.5 points per game as the Chargers earned wins over Kings Mountain and Forestview.

  • Savanni Harris, Hunter Huss: Finished with a triple-double (10 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) in a 59-23 win over Ashbrook. She followed with 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in a win over North Gaston.

  • Oshauna Holland, Stuart Cramer: Had 25 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five steals in a 65-56 win over Forestview. She followed with a double-double, scoring a career-high 47 points to go with 14 rebounds, five steals and three assists.

  • Dereon Kee, Shelby: Led the Lady Lions last week with 14.5 points per game, along with three rebounds and three assists as her team fell to Thomas Jefferson and defeated Burns.

  • Emma Montanari, East Lincoln: Averaged 30.5 points, seven rebounds, 3.5 assists and five steals as the Lady Mustangs rolled past North Lincoln and Hickory.

  • Kionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Finished with a quadruple-double, going for 27 points, 15 rebounds, 13 assists and 10 steals along with six blocks in a 73-33 win over East Gaston.
