Purina dog food that can cause barfing to kidney failure recalled after pets get sick

Seven production code lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental dog food were recalled after Nestlé Purina PetCare heard about two separate customers’ dogs who suffered symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity.

“Once taken off the diet, each of these dogs recovered,” the company-written, FDA-posted recall notice stated.

The dog food might have elevated levels of Vitamin D. That’s a good thing for dogs, but too much of that good thing leads to Vitamin D toxicity, which, the alert explains, might “include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction.”

The good news for dog owners: You probably don’t have this dry dog food in your home. But that’s because of the bad news: The only way you should have this in your home is by prescription, so your dog likely has been dealing with other health issues.

This covers 8-pound and 20-pound bags with production code Nos. 2249 1082; 2250 1082; 2276 1082; 2277 1082; 2290 1082; 2360 1082; and 2361 1082.

If you have this dog food, toss it out in a manner that no other dogs, stray animals or wildlife can eat it. If your dog shows any of the aforementioned symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity, head for a vet.
