Purdue vs. Michigan player ratings: Two guards get perfect marks in Boilers' blowout

Purdue was a 17.5-point favorite, so let's no pretend this was supposed to be a close game against a poor Michigan team. But man, that was impressive from the No. 2 Boilermakers.

"Purdue is rocking and rolling," Peacock's Robbie Hummel said as the Boilermakers took a 49-25 lead at halftime, and eventually won 99-67.

STARTERS

∎ Zach Edey — A quiet first half from a scoring standpoint (6 points, 2-of-7 shooting), but he was working his butt off trying to establish post position. And his teammates do a great job of whipping those passes into him. He heated up in the second half, doing work on the offensive glass, including one rebound that turned into a monster dunk. "This is like a Shaquille O'Neal jam here," Hummel said. He finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Another ho-hum double-double in just 26 minutes. Rating: 8.0

∎ Trey Kaufman-Renn — TKR provided some good, energetic minutes in the first half, chasing down rebounds (three) and finished a nice early and-1 off a Braden Smith dime. For the game he had three blocks, mainly helping on the weakside or as the trailing defender. He had a nice drive-and-finish with shot clock winding down, in the second half which prompted Hummel with this deep cut "like Luis Scola for the Indiana Pacers." TKR finished with seven points and six rebounds. Rating: 7.0

∎ Lance Jones — What an addition to this roster. He led all scorers with 12 first-half points and his swagger just elevates the Boilers. He hit three 3s in the first half and consistently took his bigger defenders off the dribble and to the rack. He also reeled in three steals that really got the Mackey Arena crowd into it. "He's having himself a whale of a game..." Hummel said. "What a pick up. What an unheralded pick up that he was for this Purdue team." He finished with 24 points, including 5-of-9 from behind the arc. Rating: 10.0

∎ Fletcher Loyer — He opened the scoring in the first half with a corner 3 off some beautiful ball movement and then closed the half with another 3 as time was winding down. Not much in between. He really struggled with Terrance Williams II in the opening minutes of the second half. Matt Painter saw the same thing and brought in Cam Heide to match up athletically five minutes into the second half. With the game well in-hand, Painter gave the second-half minutes to Heide, Ethan Morton and Myles Colvin. Rating: 5.5

∎ Braden Smith — You can forget about that shooting slump. Smith dominated the early moments of the game, outscoring Michigan 9-7 to start. And when he wasn't going 4-for-4 from the field, he was dropping dimes. He was in complete control. "What a pass," was repeated a few times on the broadcast, as was "on a rope." He finished with 11 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. A perfect game, really. Rating: 10.0

RESERVES

∎ Mason Gillis — It was your typical Mason Gillis reel in the first half. He drilled that top of the key 3 he's so good at, had a nice cut-and-finish off a Smith assist, and then got an offensive rebound off his own free throw miss and scored on the putback. He was +17 in nine first-half minutes. Rating: 7.0

∎ Ethan Morton — A +18 in his 15 minutes, Morton did the little things and even hit a corner 3. Rating: 7.0

∎ Cam Heide — As mentioned above, he got some extra PT in the second half in place of Loyer. The highlight was a drive and jam, throwing down on 6-9 Oliver Nkamhoua. Rating: 6.0

∎ Caleb Furst — Some real good energy off the bench in the first half with five rebounds (including two offensive boards). It could have been better (he missed some bunnies), but his four first-half minutes were impactful. The second half, not as much. Rating: 6.0

∎ Myles Colvin — You're looking at the heir apparent for Lance Jones next season. An ultra-confident shooter, Colvin stepped into and drilled three 3s in a seven-minute second-half shift. Rating: 8.0

∎ Will Berg — He got some extended run (5:40) because of the margin. He grabbed an offensive rebound to the crowd's delight, then got fouled on putback attempt. He also had a nice seal, turn and dunk that showed he's been paying attention to Zach Edey in practice. Rating: 6.0

∎ Brian Waddell — He checked in with Berg and Matt Painter has often talked about Waddell's athleticism. We think Heide and Colvin when it comes to Purdue's dunkers, but the jam of the night may have belonged to the Carmel grad. Rating: 6.0

∎ Chase Martin — Played two minutes, grabbed a rebound. Rating: N/A

∎ Sam King — Had an assist in his two minutes. Rating: N/A

∎ Carson Barrett — Hit a 3 with a little more than a minute left and then fans went wild. Also grabbed an offensive rebound. Rating: 6.5
