Publix is open. Banks? Garbage pickup? What’s up on MLK Day in Miami, Fort Lauderdale

Stores celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by staying open, perhaps using it as an excuse to have a sale, hoping you’ll use your day off to buy stuff.

As for the financial world and those services paid for by your tax dollars, here’s what’s open, what’s operational and what’s closed on MLK Day 2023.

Mass Transit

Miami-Dade: Metrobus, Metrorail and Metromover will operate with regular weekday service.

Administrative offices will be closed. Special Transportation Service customers can still reserve or cancel a trip by calling 305-871-1111.

Broward: Broward County Transit will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Trip-planning assistance for fixed and paratransit routes will be available from 7 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. at 954-357-8400 (TTY 954-357-8302). The Broward Main Terminal in downtown Fort Lauderdale, 101 NW First Ave., and the Lauderhill Transit Center, 1359 NW 40th Ave., will be staffed from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. as will the Northeast Transit Center at MLK Boulevard and Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Tri-Rail: Tri-Rail will run on a regular weekday schedule.

Garbage pickup

Miami: No garbage or recycling pickup. If you usually get a Monday pickup, it’ll be done on your usual next scheduled day.

Miami-Dade: No garbage pickup. If you usually get a Monday pickup, it’ll be done on your usual next scheduled day. Recycling will be picked up, however.

Trash and recycling centers will be closed. The North and South Dade Landfills as well as the Resources Recovery Facility will be open.

If Miami-Dade Solid Waste Management picks up your garbage on Mondays, don’t bother putting the bins out on MLK Day.

Fort Lauderdale: Regular pickup service.

Broward County: Regular garbage, recycling and bulk pickup will be done.

In other municipalities, check with your waste management provider.

Stores and malls

Supermarkets including Publix, big-box stores such as Costco and Target, and malls including Aventura and Sawgrass Mills keep regular hours on MLK Day.

U.S. Postal Service

Post office branches will be closed and no mail pickup or delivery will occur.

Banks

The Federal Reserve Bank is closed. Most bank branches also will be closed. ATMs, online banking and bank by phone remain open.

Stock markets

The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ are closed.

County courts and county offices

Miami-Dade: Closed.

Broward: Closed.

Public Schools

Closed in Miami-Dade and Broward.

Libraries

Miami-Dade: Closed, but books and other media on the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other topics are always available via the online library system.

Broward: Closed, but books and other media are always available at the online version of the Broward County Library system.
