Professor T cast members Emma Naomi and Barney White have hinted at major differences in the show for its third season.

The ITV1 drama will be back tonight (March 27), with Death in Paradise's Ben Miller reprising his role as Cambridge University criminologist Professor Jasper Tempest.

One of the biggest changes for the show moving forward is that Professor T will start the season in prison, after being arrested for firing an unlicensed gun in a police station.

When Digital Spy recently chatted with the cast, Emma Naomi (who plays DI Lisa Donckers) and Barney White (who plays DS Dan Winters) addressed how the professor's imprisonment changes things for his colleagues with the police.

"It’s certainly a different environment – you’re going to meet a host of different characters," Emma told us. "I think it’s darker, and I think aesthetically it looks different, and I think epic is a nice one for season three – we are definitely seeing a lot more emotional leakage from the professor because he’s put in a really difficult situation, which is extremely confronting for him.

"There’s nowhere for him to hide, so anyone who is [wanting to know] what is going on with the professor is definitely going to feel satisfied with how that story resolves itself."

Barney agreed that the whole scale of the show feels "grander, bigger" now that Professor T is removed from the crime-solving process.

"The houses are bigger that we’re investigating, and the first three episodes the professor’s in prison, and we filmed it in a real prison, and the inmates had only moved out two/three weeks before we were in there. So that felt very real and present, so yeah, as Emma said, they’ve ramped up the darkness and the emotion definitely in series three," he explained.

The duo spoke about the "fantastic" and "brilliant" locations where they filmed for season three, including the aforementioned real prison.

"[The locations] have been very rich in terms of detail, things that you would never know if you weren’t actually there," Emma said.

"The prison that we visited, what was written on the walls, what was etched in the tables, little things like that…that’s definitely a unique experience to be given access to a place like that. Just as a person but also as an actor, I think that’s not something that we might ever see again."

She added: "There’s a lot to be taken from that, and I’m not really sure if I can encapsulate it into one sentence, but it’s a tough place to be – a prison. I can’t actually imagine, really, what it’s like to be in prison day-to-day, but we saw glimpses at least."

ITV1 has already renewed the crime drama for a fourth season ahead of the third even premiering.

Professor T returns tonight (March 27) at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.
