Wake Internal Medicine Consultants closed its two urgent care centers, effective Friday, the practice announced.

The decision to close the urgent care facilities was made due to rising costs and “the changing health care landscape,” the practice said. It said it expects patients to be able to find immediate health care elsewhere because there are a large number of freestanding urgent care locations in the area.

FastMed has four urgent care locations in Raleigh, on Hargett Street, Creedmoor Road, Millbrook Road and Glenwood Avenue. Other urgent care facilities in the area include UNC Urgent Care centers on Duraleigh Road and Six Forks Road; WakeMed urgent care centers on Forestville Road and Oberlin Road; and Duke Health urgent care centers on Harps Mill Road, Alm Street and Legacy Oaks Drive.

Wake Internal Medicine will continue to have medical providers on-call after hours who can help with urgent situations via the phone or telemedicine.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and disruption this closure may cause our patients,” the release said. “Our primary concern has always been your health and well-being, and we understand the importance of accessible medical services.”

Wake Internal Medicine is the largest independent multi-specialist physician-owned practice in the Triangle, according to its website. It has two locations in Raleigh, with the main location on Blue Ridge Road and the North Raleigh location on Durant Road. Started in 1938, it currently has 33 medical providers on staff.

Wake Internal Medicine did not say if the closures would result in people losing jobs. It did not respond to a request for comment.
