Princess Charlotte celebrates her 9th birthday today!
To mark the milestone, Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a new photograph of the young princess, smiling outside next to flowers in a red sweater and denim skirt. "Happy 9th Birthday, Princess Charlotte!" they posted. "Thank you for all of the kind messages today."
Like Prince Louis's 6th birthday picture, the Prince and Princess of Wales released the photograph of their daughter directly on their social media channels, instead of sharing it with news organizations under embargo, as they historically have done for their children's birthdays.

The Wales family has had a turbulent start to the year, following the Princess of Wales's abdominal surgery and subsequent cancer diagnosis. When Kate shared the news that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy, she revealed in her video message. "It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be okay. As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits."
Just this week, when asked by a well-wisher about Kate and their children, Prince William said "all doing well," a rare update on her health. It's unlikely we'll see Princess Charlotte and her siblings in public any time soon; they last appeared with the royal family on Christmas day (which was Kate's last public engagement), and Prince George joined his dad at a soccer match in April.
