"I am saddened to hear of the death of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah," Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement. "His Highness was a great friend of the UK and we will remember fondly all he did for our bilateral relationship and his work to promote stability in the Middle East. I offer my sincere condolences to the Al Sabah family and people of Kuwait."
Prince William last visited Kuwait in 2019, and the UK and Kuwait have maintained a strong relationship since Kuwait gained independence from the UK back in 1961.
Following Sheikh Nawaf's passing, his 83-year-old half-brother, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who was the world's oldest crown prince, was named the new emir. (Sheikh Nawaf was emir for just three years.) At King Charles's coronation in May, Prince Mishal attended on behalf of his brother, and he visited the UK in October where he was received by Charles at Buckingham Palace.
