Prince William Made Colonel-in-Chief of Prince Harry’s Former Regiment

Since King Charles came to the throne in 2022 there have been a number of shifts in the honorary military appointments that working members of the royal family hold. And today, one appointment was officially handed over as the King formally transferred the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to Prince William at a service in Hampshire.

In a rare joint engagement, King Charles handed Prince William an Army Air Corps beret and made a speech during a brief ceremony. The pair stood before an Apache helicopter at the Army Aviation Centre in Hampshire; however, the fact that Prince Harry flew Apaches and served with 662 Squadron in the Army Air Corps for three-and-a-half years was not mentioned.

“In August 2023, following His Majesty’s Accession, The King was pleased to announce military appointments including that The Prince of Wales would become Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement about today. “The role was previously held by His Majesty The King, as Prince of Wales, for 31 years.”

The unified presence of Charles and William comes as Harry remains seemingly completely out in the cold from the rest of his family having recently visited the UK without seeing his father or brother. Harry’s team released a brief statement saying that a meeting with his father was “unfortunately” not possible, adding, that he hoped to see his father “soon.” Harry saw Charles earlier this year just after the King announced his cancer diagnosis, but his relationship with William remains more estranged.

Prince Harry served in the military for 10 years and carried out two tours of Afghanistan. When he was a working royal he held a number of honorary military appointments, but had to relinquish them when he and Meghan walked away from royal life.

The Sussexes have, however, continued their charity work in a private capacity. They have just returned from a three-day trip to Nigeria where they were invited because of Harry's Invictus Games for wounded servicemen and women. Meghan has also discovered that she is 43% Nigerian and thanked the country for welcoming her "home."
