Prince William is continuing his royal duties as King Charles III and Princess Kate’s recover from separate medical issues. His latest engagements include an eventful trip to Wrexham, Wales.

William’s visit comes in celebration of St. David’s Day, the feast day for the country’s patron saint. Although he made the journey solo, Welsh children greeted the prince at Ysgol yr Holl Saint All Saints’ Primary School bearing gifts for several royal family members.

In a video posted to X (formerly known at Twitter), three pupils hand William three bright red dragon plushies (one for each of his kids, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five) and a huge bouquet of flowers. “Look at this! Thank you very much. The children will love these when I come home with these guys,” he said while accepting the presents. “That’s really kind. I’ll pass those onto Catherine, as well,” he continued.

William commemorated his stopover at the school with an Instagram post featuring photos of himself posing with a large group of smiley children; sitting with a table of students in a classroom; holding hands with Ruby McBurney, a surviving child of a Gresford Disaster victim, at the Gresford Colliery Disaster memorial (which remembers the 266 men who died in an underground fire); and speaking with two memorial volunteers while holding helmets.

“Great to be in Wrexham today. First up, seeing the work of All Saints School, running their own brilliant Eisteddfodau. Before marking the 90th anniversary year of the Gresford mining disaster with a visit to the poignant memorial,” he wrote in the caption, including a Welsh translation below it.

Hours later, William met with several Wrexham A.F.C. players at Racecourse Ground stadium and community members along the way. In the spirit of festivities, he capped off the day at The Turf Pub with Wrexham AFC Chairman and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor Rob McElhenney.

In a video posted to YouTube, the two are seen each pulling a pint, with William cheekily commenting, “Still got a horrible head on it. That’s why I don’t work behind the bar. That might settle in about an hour, talk amongst yourselves.”

William and McElhenney then switched to something “easier to pour”: whisky, joining one another for a “cheers” before taking a shot.

William once again took to Instagram, posting a montage of the events with the caption: “#HappyStDavidsDay 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Great to be with Rob, Wayne and the people of Wrexham today!”

The prince’s trip comes as his wife, Princess Kate, heals from a planned abdominal surgery she underwent in mid-January. The princess is said to be on the mend but will not return to public engagements until after Easter, which falls on March 31 this year.

King Charles, on the other hand, has been staying at the royal Sandringham estate as he recuperates from regular treatments for a “form of cancer.” Buckingham Palace said in its initial announcement that the monarch has postponed public-facing duties; although, he has maintained state business and official paperwork as usual. Earlier this month, he also met with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in person for the first time since his medical news was revealed.
