Prince Philip’s Life in Photos

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II, died on Friday afternoon local time, Buckingham Palace announced. He was 99.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss,” Buckingham Palace said. His death comes two months before he would have turned 100.

Recently, Prince Philip was in ill health and had been hospitalized in February, undergoing surgery for a pre-existing heart condition. His last public appearance was in July 2020 when he transferred his ceremonial role as colonel-in-chief of The Rifles to his daughter-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. He retired from his royal duties in August 2017 at age 96.

The prince was born in Corfu, Greece, on June 10, 1921, to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. He was educated in France and Germany, and then joined the British Royal Navy in 1939. Before marrying Queen Elizabeth in 1947, he abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles, became a naturalized British subject and was named Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich.
