Prince Harry arrived late, missed Queen Elizabeth’s death

Prince Harry was unable to say goodbye to his grandmother in person on Thursday before her death.

The Duke of Sussex arrived at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after Queen Elizabeth II had already died, the BBC reported.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, did not travel to Scotland with Harry. The two were already in the U.K. for charity work and had been staying at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

The couple initially planned to attend the WellChild Awards Ceremony together in London but were forced to adjust their plans, according to the Independent. Prince Andrew, Prince William and Prince Edward were at the Queen’s side when she died.

Kate Middleton was unable to join her husband at the castle. She was busy seeing off their three children on their first day of school in London.

Elizabeth was last photographed in public on Tuesday during her meeting with Liz Truss, the nation’s newly appointed prime minister.

The Queen’s first-born son, Charles, and his wife, Camilla, were the first royal family members to arrive at Balmoral Castle. William, the newest heir to the throne, was next to the manor. Photographs obtained by British news outlets showed William driving a Range Rover carrying the Queen’s other sons, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, along with Edward’s wife, Sophie.

Harry was spotted hours later in the backseat of a car driven by security personnel.

Princess Anne, the Queen’s only daughter, was already in Scotland having undertaken royal duties earlier this week.

Meghan and Harry traveled from their California home to Europe earlier this week for a series of visits with some of the charitable organizations they have supported over the years. Their appearance at the Young World Summit in Manchester on Monday marked their first joint working visit in England since stepping back from their senior royal roles in March 2020 and their first time in the U.K. since June, when they celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
