Figueroa says that this is her top pick for a hydrating primer. "It's literally a drink of water for your skin." That's because aloe vera is the star of the show here, she says, noting it's one of her favorite ingredients to soothe and hydrate the skin. "It plumps the skin and helps the makeup last all day." What's the best primer to wear alone?

If you want to wear a primer alone, Carr says you should select one that will give you the finish you want for the day: matte or dewy. But remember—primers are generally used to smooth and prep the skin before you apply foundation, she says, noting it's not a necessary step if you're using high-quality skincare products like moisturizer. If you want to go bare-faced, Reynolds recommends a tinted primer or moisturizer. "It's less product on the face and has a slight tint to even out the complexion, but with all the properties of a primer."

What is the best primer to minimize pores and wrinkles?

"While all primers contribute to the creation of a smooth base, silicone-based primers excel at smoothing out the texture of the skin, because the silicone element also helps to minimize pores and fine lines," says Carr.
