Preview, how to watch Texas Tech baseball vs. New Mexico

The Texas Tech baseball team adjusted its schedule over the weekend because of weather, having to roll a scheduled Saturday game into a Sunday doubleheader. The Red Raiders won't be adjusting their schedule the next couple of weeks to protect their RPI.

Texas Tech (29-13) hosts New Mexico (19-19) in a non-conference game at 2 p.m. Tuesday and hosts UT-Rio Grande Valley (19-17) in another non-conference affair the following Tuesday. In between is a Big 12 weekend series at Kansas.

New Mexico is No. 209 in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). UTRGV is No. 228 and beat Texas last week.

This is the time of year when highly placed teams will cancel games to avoid taking an RPI hit.

"Yeah, we won't be doing that," Tech coach Tim Tadlock said Sunday. "All the RPI stuff, everything you can think of as far as that goes, you play good baseball, it'll all take care of itself. And I haven't looked at any of that, but no, that's not something we want to get in the habit of doing, I don't think."

Texas Tech jumped to No. 28 in the RPI after sweeping a three-game weekend home series against West Virginia. The Mountaineers came to town ranked No. 24, sharing the Big 12 lead and on a seven-game conference win streak. Tech won 15-2, 6-4 and 3-1, handing the Mountaineers their second sweep in their past 24 Big 12 series.

Tech is second in the Big 12 and top 20 in NCAA Division I in home runs. Five Tech players are among the top dozen in the Big 12 in runs batted in: Second baseman T.J. Pompey (.326, eight home runs, 45 RBI), center fielder Damian Bravo (.421-4-40), right fielder Austin Green (.341-6-40), first baseman Gavin Kash (.317-10-39) and third baseman Cade McGee (.303-10-37).

New Mexico has lost 10 of its past 13 games. Leading the Lobos are catcher Jake Holland (.391-13-46), first baseman Reed Spenrath (.336-9-31) and right fielder Will Asby (.317-8-39).

Tech right fielder Owen Washburn will miss extended time because of an injury for the second year in a row. Washburn missed the last two months last season with a dislocated elbow. He suffered facial injuries on a foul ball sliced into the dugout Friday night.

"He's going to be out a while; I can tell you that," Tadlock said, declining to elaborate for medical privacy reasons.

Washburn was in the ballpark Sunday, but not in uniform.
