Press-Citizen letters to the editor

This is an all-American story about a good friend of mine An Army Veteran who inspired his two sons to also serve our country. . .tragically, one did not return home from the battlefield in Iraq. . .a successful business owner. . .a God-honoring man who has shared his faith with thousands. . .searched his heart and answered God’s call to help save our nation.

David Pautsch (pronounced pouch) is challenging the incumbent who is no longer serving the people who trusted her to represent them.

At the recent convention of Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, David received a standing ovation after delivering his remarks. (That’s never happened before!). And it happened again at the Iowa State Republican Convention in Des Moines. David’s seven-minute speech had standing ovations and at least 12 bursts of applause.

At the District Convention in April, the incumbent came in at the last moment and left as soon as she was done justifying her unjustifiable record. The State delegates responded with a similar lack of any enthusiasm. The voters know. A recent independent poll tells it all. . .the incumbent earned only 32% favorability!David believes in: secure borders, free speech, gun rights, life, honest elections, term limits, farms, rational energy and foreign policy, budget controls, constitutional rights and our desperate need for the LORD's help. Our country needs a true statesman. To save this nation, vote David Pautsch for the 1st Congressional District of Iowa on June 4th, and help Make America Great Again.Jay OlsonLeClaire, Iowa

In support of county supervisor Rod Sullivan

Rod Sullivan was an early advocate for the GuideLink Center, the Community ID, and raising the minimum wage.

He’s a longtime supporter of local food initiatives, free tax help for low income residents, and increased funding for affordable housing.

He’s responsive to constituents, cautious with our tax dollars, and forthright about where he stands on issues.

Rod works hard to improve the quality of life for the people of Johnson County. He has earned another term on the Board of Supervisors.

Please join me in voting for Rod Sullivan on June 4, or vote early at the County Administration Building.

Mandi Remington is a justice fighter who walks the walk

Join me in voting for Mandi for Johnson County Supervisor in the June 4 Democratic Primary.

From Remington’s own experience as a single mother raising three children on one salary, a long-time renter, a past aid recipient, a daycare provider, and a domestic violence survivor, Mandi knows the less wealthy side of the county. She uses that understanding through CCAN [Corridor Community Action Network] to voluntarily assist over 100 area organizations do their work of fighting poverty and hunger, by providing clothing, shelter, and other care. That compassion will create more just policies.

As a past County Supervisor, I know that success in the job comes from showing up and doing something with your position. I have seen other Supervisors not attend Board meetings or liaison assignments and not accomplish much. Mandi shows up to multiple boards and commissions in the county and UI and her accomplishments increase because her understanding grows. Remington’s calm, reasoned, thoughtful, researched approach to issues and policy will help the Board function better.

Mandi has environmental credibility as an Iowa City Climate Ambassador who is helping others write climate action plans. With Johnson County as one of MidAmerican Energy’s biggest consumers, she will continue to advocate for them to close their 5 Iowa coal plants and give us the 24/7/100% carbon free energy needed to slow climate change, improve our health, and attract employers.

Vote for Mandi in the June 4 Democratic Primary. You can learn more at mandi4supervisor.com.

Iowa needs more compassionate, strong leaders, Supervisor Rod Sullivan is one of the good ones

He has earned my support.

Rod is a fighter. He has helped our county innovate and he’s not afraid to ruffle feathers in Des Moines. While our state government has failed to provide adequate mental health services, Rod has fought to fill the gaps with programs like the GuideLink Mental Health Access Center. While our state government has failed to increase the minimum wage, Rod has fought for workers in Johnson County to get a raise.

Rod understands that Democrats must succeed inside and outside of Johnson County races to deliver for our constituents. He has been an integral member of the Johnson County Democratic Party’s organizing efforts for years and he has helped make our party stronger. Rod helped me understand our state’s political landscape when I decided to run for the legislature.

Rod Sullivan has the experience and the energy to contribute to Johnson County’s bright future. I’ll be voting for Rod. Join me on or before June 4.

State Representative Adam Zabner

House District 90, Democrat

Johnson County residents have come to expect an effective, forward-thinking, and open county government

That is why I’m vigorously supporting Rod Sullivan’s re-election to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

Rod listens and has worked hard to represent our progressive values and community priorities. He looks out for those that need our help most.

Rod has been a leader for better mental health care, environmental sustainability and equal rights for all.

He has the experience, judgement and skills we need right now.

Please join me in supporting Rod Sullivan for re-election to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

To all Veterans that use the Iowa City Hospital and clinics

The VA is discontinuing the Patient Escort services. These are the folks that greet us at the front door and the ER door and provide assistance with wheelchairs and directions. Many of us old timers are at the point in life that a wheelchair to get around the place is a a necessity. We dont like it much but it is what it is. The Escorts have always been great ambassadors to the ICVAMC and should be maintained. Its shortsighted on the part of management to discontinue the service. Please let the Admin know you want it to cotinue. The ICVAMC phone number is 319-338-0581.
