Prep Spotlight: SHG's Wieland outduels Volpert, SHS and other results from April 10-11

Here are the high school softball, girls soccer and boys tennis results around Springfield from Wednesday and Thursday:

SOFTBALL

SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 1, SPRINGFIELD HIGH 0: At SHG, winning pitcher Kenzie Wieland outdueled Springfield starter Mia Volpert and Wieland was responsible for the only run of the game as the Cyclones won in the Central State Eight Conference.

Wieland walloped a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the third inning and finished 3-for-3 at the plate. She was just as dominant in the circle, striking out 14 batters, walking two and yielding four hits.

Springfield (8-3 overall, 4-2 in CS8) threatened in the seventh when Volpert doubled with two outs. But Wieland got Kendall Knauer to pop out to end the game as SHG improved to 5-5 and 3-1.

Knauer finished 2-for-4, and Volpert finished with 13 strikeouts and one walk, allowing six hits.

CHATHAM GLENWOOD 12, LINCOLN 0 (5 innings): At Lincoln, Taryn Griffith went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs to lead unbeaten Glenwood to a Central State Eight Conference win.

Griffith popped a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and she had run-scoring singles in the first and second. Karmen Edwards finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI and Cassandra Feld had a two-run double. Mollie Cascio scored a run with a sacrifice bunt and added an RBI double for Glenwood (11-0 overall, 5-0 in CS8).

Winning pitcher Irie Lohrenz struck out seven, walked zero and gave up two hits in three innings of work. Sophia Feld threw two scoreless innings in relief.

Lincoln fell to 4-9 and 2-4.

ATHENS 22, RIVERTON 3 (4 innings): At Athens, Preslie Buckmaster went 3-for-3, hit two home runs and drove in six as the Warriors won in a rout.

Buckmaster hit a two-run inside-the-park home run in Athens’ 10-run first inning and added a three-run homer in a seven-run third. Carly Szoke finished 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs and Kenzie Szoke contributed a three-run double and scored four times.

Winning pitcher MacKenzie Ratliff drove in four runs and went 2-for-2, while Isabel Ingram doubled in two runs and had three RBIs. Mariah Jackson had a two-run single for Riverton, which scored twice in the first.

AUBURN 15, WILLIAMSVILLE 7: At Williamsville, Addison Wheatley hit a three-run home run in Auburn’s four-run third inning and the Trojans won a Sangamo Conference contest.

Wheatley added an RBI single in the seventh and finished with four RBIs. As a team, Auburn (12-4-1 overall, 2-0 in Sangamo) collected 18 hits with Mailee Schoen going 4-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.

Meena Taylor and Piper Taylor both had three hits and Addison Jones (2-for-4) doubled in a run.

The top four hitters in the lineup combined for all of Williamsville’s nine hits. Norah Dodsworth was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Izzy Nowack had two hits and three RBIs with a two-run home run for Williamsville (7-7, 1-2). Nicole Sinks and Naomi Roberts had two hits each and two runs scored apiece.

PLEASANT PLAINS 12, PETERBSURG PORTA 6: At Petersburg, Aspen Kitowski (2-for-4) ripped a three-run triple in the second inning and Plains took the lead for good in a Sangamo Conference win.

Plains (11-6 overall, 1-1 in Sangamo) trailed 4-1 after one inning before scoring five runs in the second. Abby Davis had two hits, scored three runs and drove in two, while Jillian Cameron went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Kayden Skinner scored twice and had two hits in the win.

Aubrey Vogel scored a run and went 2-for-4 and teammate Marissa Jiannoni doubled and had two RBIs for PORTA (10-4, 1-2).

RUSHVILLE-INDUSTRY 9, WEST PRAIRIE CENTRAL 8: At Rushville, Charlee Gerleman stole home and Italee Ford scored on a wild pitch as the Rockets scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a victory.

Rushville-Industry scored six runs in the first to take a 6-3 lead. West Central eventually led 8-7 until Rushville’s two runs in the fifth.

Devin Vogler finished 3-for-4 with a run and Brynna Swan had a hit and two RBIs for Rushville-Industry, which drew eight walks and stole six bases.

Despite walking 11 and striking out five, Swan was the winning pitcher, working four innings.

BARRY WESTERN 6, BEARDSTOWN 4: At Beardstown, Barry Western’s Brooklyn Stutte and Emma Dixon each had RBI singles to break a 4-4 tie in the top of the sixth inning for a West Central Conference win.

Beardstown had tied the game in the fifth when Vanessa Nunez walked and later scored on a wild pitch. The Tigers finished with two hits and committed seven errors in the loss. Nunez tripled and Cami Coats singled to make up the two hits for Beardstown.

Pitcher Shelby Goodrich went the distance and took the loss. She struck out eight, walked none and allowed seven hits and two earned runs.

GIRLS SOCCER

ROCHESTER 1, MORTON 1: At Rochester, Drea Smith scored in the second half to pull the Rockets into a nonconference tie.

Smith scored on a pass from Ellie Gegen. That evened things up after Addie Dea gave Morton a 1-0 first-half lead.

Rochester goalkeeper Alyse Day made six saves as the Rockets moved to 7-4-1.

AUBURN 7, DECATUR EISENHOWER 0: At Auburn, Karlissa Clark scored two goals in the first half to give the Trojans a nonconference win.

Katie Pace scored in the opening 14 seconds to put Auburn (5-3-1) on top 1-0. In the seventh minute, Clark put away a pass from Ayla Stead for a 2-0 lead. Lauren Spellbrink, Hailey Brinkley and Kaileigh Luttrell then added goals to push Auburn’s lead to five. Clark and Emme Divjak closed out the scoring.

SOFTBALL

PAWNEE 16, RIVERTON 1 (4 innings): At Pawnee, five players had multiple RBIs as Pawnee blasted the visiting Hawks in a nonconference game.

Third baseman Adalyn Boblitt tripled and drove in three runs. Kalee Hinds was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Teammates Makenna Corrie, Elissa Day and Mae McTaggart all had two RBIs each. Corrie, who doubled, and McTaggart, also had two hits apiece.

Emma Selhime and Ashlyne Cobb combined for 10 strikeouts in two innings pitched each.

CARLINVILLE 8, EAST ALTON-WOOD RIVER 0: At Carlinville, Cavaliers’ catcher Addison Ruyle went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Carlinville to a nonconference win.

Hannah Gibson doubled and homered for the Cavaliers, went 2-for-3, drove in two runs and scored three times.

Hallie Gibson struck out five over six innings for the win.

BEARDSTOWN 12, ASTORIA/VIT 0 (5 innings): At Astoria, Bella Palmer and Shelby Goodrich combined to drive home six runs in the Tigers’ nonconference win.

Goodrich, the Tigers’ pitcher and No. 8 hitter, tripled and had three RBIs. Palmer, who played first base and hit seventh, doubled and drove in three.

Kylynn Maltby and Hallie Lawson also doubled for Beardstown. Lawson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Goodrich struck out six in a complete-game shutout.

GILLESPIE 20, DUPO 4 (4 innings): At Gillespie, Laci Schuckenbrock homered twice to lead the Miners to a blowout nonconference victory.

Paxton Reid went 2-for-4 with five RBIs for the Miners.

Dupo scored a pair off a Gillespie error in the top of the first. The Miners got a run back after leadoff hitter Ava Parish scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first.

Gillespie scored seven unearned runs off four Dupo errors. The Miners took the lead for good with a six-run second inning.

Amari Vickery was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Schuckenbrock had three RBIs and Delaney Taylor and Addi Cox each doubled and combined for three hits and two RBIs.

RUSHVILLE-INDUSTRY 5, AUGUSTA SOUTHEASTERN 4: At Rushville, the Rockets put three runs across the plate in the bottom of the first then rallied with two in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a narrow victory.

Italee Ford led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field and Devin Vogler tied the game with a triple to center. On a 2-2 count, Vogler scored on a wild pitch for the winning run.

Rushville-Industry's Charlee Gerleman led off the bottom of the first with a single to right field before Ford gave the Rockets a 1-0 lead on a double to left. Vogler reached on an error before Brynna Swan doubled to plate Ford and give R-I a 2-0 lead.

With one out, Elliot Hood lined out to center field. Vogler scored for a 3-0 lead.

HAVANA 7, ABINGDON-AVON 4: At Havana, Hannah Hodgson hit two home runs, drove in five runs and won a complete-game pitching performance in the Ducks’ win.

Hogsdon hit a three-run homer to right field to give Havana a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fifth, Hogsdon hit a two-run shot to center for a 7-4 edge.

She struck out two and allowed four runs on six hits and two walks.

Jaylynn Sarnes doubled and drove in a run for the Ducks.

DELAVAN 2, ATHENS 1: At Athens, Carly Szoke had two of the Warriors’ three hits and scored a run in a Tomahawk Conference game.

Kenzie Szoke had the other hit for Athens.
