Prep soccer report: District titles claimed by some as playoff picture starts to get sorted

A TAPPS state championship is on the line for the St. Michael's boys, while the UIL playoff picture is starting to get clearer for some local districts. Here is the midweek Austin-area high school soccer report:

Boys

St. Michael’s to play for state title: The Crusaders will play in Friday’s TAPPS Division II state title game after defeating Grapevine Faith Christian 2-1 Thursday in the semifinals at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex. Chris Wheeler scored off an assist from Ben Hoang and Peter Rogenthien beat the defense with a goal from more than 60 yards away off a free kick to lead St. Michael’s.The Crusaders reached the state tournament with a 4-0 win over Frisco Legacy Christian in the regional championship game. Rogenthien had a long free-kick goal and Diego Resendiz, Gave Zorio and Ben Brophy all scored.

Georgetown 2, East View 1: The Eagles wrapped up the No. 2 seed out of District 23-5A with a win over their rival. Martin Valdes’ brace paced Georgetown, with Kash Anderson providing an assist. Hector Morales finished Damian Cantu’s pass for East View’s goal.

Round Rock 4, Cedar Ridge 0: Santiago Irizarry had two goals and an assist and Nuhan Mahmud recorded a brace as the Dragons won their sixth straight game to clinch a playoff berth out of District 25-6A. Taiki Fukushima added two assists and Tate Gutierrez also had an assist for Round Rock.

Manor New Tech 1, Taylor 0: The Knights clinched the District 24-4A title thanks to Isaac Garcia’s goal and Adrian Mendoza’s clean sheet.

Northeast 3, Crockett 0: Luis Carlos Vargas, Jasson Morales and Evan Vasquez scored for the Raiders, who clinched the No. 3 seed out of District 24-5A. Roger Amador and Jose Juarez provided assists, with Gerson Dominguez and Juan Gonzalez combining for the clean sheet in goal.

Bowie 3, Westlake 1: Rowen Well’s hat trick led the Bulldogs, who took a large step towards the District 26-6A title. Xander Pratt and Joe Kwon had assists for Bowie. William Fagerberg had the Chaps’ goal off an assist from Dylan Holm.

LASA 5, Navarro 0: Owen Rooff and Kiran Kini had braces, Alexander Marintzer scored and Yohannes Heineman provided two assists as the Raptors secured their second straight District 24-5A title. Isaac Held and Yared McKaughan had assists and Marco Vidal and Benjamin Ozimek teamed up for the shutout in goal.

McCallum 4, Travis 0: Summit Flowers provided another clean sheet and Luka Alvarez-Scarborough, Austin Gourrier, Speight Twohey and Henry Plum all scored for the Knights. Ohad Klein joined Twohey in recording assists.

Vandegrift 3, Vista Ridge 1: The Vipers clinched the District 25-6A title thanks to goals by Blake Melcher, Rahul Gupta and Luke Hawley. James Hehman provided an assist. J Mossholder scored the Rangers’ goal on a penalty.

Glenn 3, Rouse 2: Angel Rosas, Tito Don Juan and Sawyer Homec provided goals as the Grizzlies secured the District 25-5A title and stayed undefeated. Owen Nichols’ brace off assists from Nathan Shaw and Sebastian Grande Flores led the Raiders.

Del Valle 3, Dripping Springs 1: Daniel Cerda, Misael Rangel and Octavio Estrada all found the net as the Cardinals clinched a playoff spot. Dylan Zahn scored the Tigers’ goal thanks to an assist by Parker Johnson.

Pflugerville 4, Elgin 0: Carlos Cruz scored twice, Joel Vergara had a goal and two assists and Roberto Jaramillo added a goal to continue a late-season hot streak by the Panthers. Juan Denova and Nico Marra combined for the shutout in goal.

Stony Point 2, McNeil 1: Emmanuel Diaz and Alexis Salgado scored for the Tigers in a crucial win that kept their playoff hopes alive in District 25-6A.

Connally 5, Hendrickson 2: Lawrence Doe’s hat trick led the Cougars, who also received goals from Mauricio Orozco and Gavin Latas.

Girls

Leander 1, Cedar Park 1: In the battle of the District 25-5A titans, it was a draw as Kylie Jamar scored for Leander on an assist by Kylie Bernal and Lily Rangel scored off a free kick for the Timberwolves.

Lake Travis 4, Austin High 1: Lake Travis moved into a favorable position vying for first place in District 26-6A with the win. Breckyn Ferrell’s two goals and assist, Amelia Clark’s goal and assist and Avery Lang’s score and assist led the Cavs. Avery Lang also recorded an assist. Eva Narvarte scored for the Maroons.

Westlake 1, Bowie 1: Kit-Kat Valentine scored for the Chaps and Samantha Rabb recorded the Bulldogs’ goal.

Johnson 8, Akins 0: The Jaguars raced past the Eagles to retain sole possession of first place in district action. Emma Alvarado’s hat trick and goals from Lilly Christenson, Drew Taylor, Allison Sanchez, Jadyn Jaeger and Sari Hernandez led Johnson. Maddie Coats and London Mendoza teamed up for the clean sheet.

Dripping Springs 3, Del Valle 0: Dripping Springs blanked Del Valle. The Tigers are sixth in the district with three matches remaining.

District 26-6A: With three games left in district play, six teams are alive for the four playoff berths, but there is a week off for spring break after the Friday matches that will build suspense. Standings today are Johnson 9-2-2, Lake Travis 8-3-1, Anderson 8-3-2, Westlake 8-4-2, Bowie 7-5-1, and Dripping Springs 7-5-2. Friday night Bowie plays Lake Travis, Dripping Springs plays Anderson and Johnson plays Westlake. Those outcomes will key the importance of the final week of the season.

Round Rock 5, Cedar Ridge 0: The Dragons clinched the District 25-6A championship as five different players scored: Zoe Dick, Kaiya Bullock, Phia Hull, A.J. Mayock and Issy Brown.

Westwood 6, Manor 0: Mia Wiele had a hat trick to lead the Warriors, who clinched second place in 25-6A with the victory. Tayla Score added two goals and two assists in the win, while Elena Zavalla had a goal, Lanier Harvey had two assists and Pritika Candra added an assist.

Vandegrift 1, Vista Ridge 0: Kayley Mooney scored the only goal of the match on an assist from Elena Welch. Goalkeeper Kyla Jones notched another shutout for the Vipers.

Stony Point 2, McNeil 2: The tie keeps Stony Point’s hopes for a playoff berth alive. A Tigers win over last-place Manor on Friday and a Vandegrift tie or loss will give the Tigers a playoff berth.

District 25-6A: Friday night is the district finale as Round Rock and Westwood have clinched playoff spots. After that, it gets interesting. Vandegrift and Westwood play, with Vandegrift needing a win to clinch a playoff spot. Vista Ridge and Stony Point have the tiebreaker edge if Westwood wins, but a Vandegrift win sends the Vipers and Rangers into the playoffs.

Georgetown 5, Cedar Creek 0: Finley Newell scored two goals while Aubrey Pelczar, Dennie Decker and Kate Cowley had a goal each for the first-place Eagles.

Hendrickson 5, Connally 0: The Hawks are tuning up for playoffs.

Elgin 3, Pflugerville 2: Huge win for Elgin who is fighting with Cedar Creek for the final playoff spot.

Cedar Creek 4, Bastrop 3: The Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive by claiming the Bastrop County title with a 4-3 win over the Bears.

District 23-5A: Georgetown edged Hendrickson 1-0 last week to win district while the Hawks are second and East View third. Elgin is fourth just ahead of Cedar Creek, but the Lady Wildcats need a tie or win Friday night to clinch a playoff berth. A Cedar Creek win over Pflugerville and Elgin loss to Hendrickson would send Cedar Creek into playoffs.

Eastside 8, LBJ 0: A solid finish by the Panthers gave them fourth place in district action and earned them a playoff berth. Nicole Reyes Rodriguez scored an astounding four goals, Cielo Hernandez had two goals and an assist and both Karen Gomez Sanchez and Cadana Muanza tallied goals to lead Eastside.

LASA 8, Navarro 0: LASA closed out the regular season with a win. With a McCallum loss or tie vs. Ann Richards Friday, it will win the district title.

McCallum 5, Crockett 0: The Knights blanked Crockett and have a showdown with Ann Richards Friday.

District 24-5A: It's crowded at the top as LASA leads McCallum by two points, 42-40, while Ann Richards is third with 34 points. Eastside gained separation for fourth place with 25 points, while fifth place Crockett has 21 points. McCallum can claim the district title with a win over Ann Richards Friday.

Giddings 11, Smithville 0: The Lady Buffs finished the regular season with a 12-0-0 district mark and 17-0-3 season record and are ranked second in the Class 4A polls.
