Prep roundup: Sprinters defy elements as Hartland boys, Pinckney girls win track invite

It was a chilly day with a few snow flurries in the air, so typically not a great day for track and field sprinters.

Speedsters from the Hartland boys and the Pinckney girls teams defied the elements with fast performances Saturday, leading their teams to championships in the Highland Games at Howell High School.

Hartland’s boys scored 104 points to beat runner-up Detroit Catholic Central by 12. Pinckney’s girls scored 98 for a 20-point cushion over second-place Hartland.

Hartland senior Cameron Cheetam became the first Livingston County runner to break 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 22 seconds in the 200 in the same meet.

Cheetam won the 100 in 10.78 seconds and the 200 in 21.95. He was also second in the 400 in 51.04.

Cheetam and Pinckney’s Dylan Reason, who ran 21.94 in 2021, are the only county athletes to break 22 seconds for an electronically timed 200.

In the girls meet, Pinckney senior CeCe Thorington raced the 100 for the first time in her career and took second in 12.86. She also won the 400 in 1:01.51.

Freshman Davea Crowe won the 200 in 26.80 and was third in the 100 hurdles in 17.94 for the Pirates.

Evan Bryan was another big contributor to Hartland’s victory, winning the long jump at 20 feet, 1 inch, placing fourth in the 400 in 53.32 and taking fifth in the 200 in 23.38.

Dylan Lawrence of Hartland tied Romen Williams of Howell for first in the high jump at 5-9.

Christian Fedewa was fourth in both hurdles for the Eagles with times of 15.93 in the 110 highs and 44.35 in the 300.

Pinckney senior Paul Moore broke the meet 3,200 record with a time of 9:26.04. The record belonged to former Hartland state champion Riley Hough, who ran 9:27.83 in 2022.

Moore also helped Pinckney’s 3,200 relay team win in 8:16.96. Zach Newman, Ethan Sandula and Jim Rochowiak were the Pirates’ other runners.

Pinckney’s girls got a first-place finish from freshman Jaelyn Ray in the 3,200 in 11:38.18 and from Madison Cooke in pole vault at 8-6.

Sophomore Elliana Neuer of Hartland won the 800 in 2:25.66 and the 1,600 in 5:26.90.

Hartland’s Camden Essenmacher, Ava Goodman, Olivia Linski and Zoe Howard won the 3,200 relay in 10:44.35.

Hartland senior Aubree Meyer won shot put at 39-11.5 and took third in discus at 96-6.

Whitmore Lake Invitational

Charyl Stockwell swept the pole vault championships, with Nathan Vaske clearing 13 feet to win the boys meet and Becka Lethorn winning the girls meet at 7-6.

Boys lacrosse

Birmingham Brother Rice 15, Hartland 5

Hartland (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season in a clash between the winners of the last two state Division 1 championships.

Jake Lewis and Dylan Ayotte each scored twice for the Eagles. Kyle Pies had Hartland’s other goal.

Battle Creek Lakeview 9, Brighton 8

Danny Copple scored three goals, while Joey Skoczylas had two goals and two assists for Brighton (7-2).

Howell 7, Oxford 5

Freshman Ryan O’Dea had one goal and five assists for Howell (5-3). Nolan O’Dea scored twice for the Highlanders. All-state goalie Nolan Hudnut had 16 saves for Howell.

Girls lacrosse

Rockford 10, Brighton 5

Brighton 9, East Grand Rapids 8

Georgia Gill scored three goals and had four assists for Brighton (10-1), which lost for the first time this season at the Rockford Play Day.

Baseball

Howell 8, Fowlerville 7

Howell’s JT Thomas hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie.

Josh Soneral drove in three runs and Brandon Hamilton was 3-for-3 for Howell (5-5).

Brighton 10, Ypsilanti Lincoln 4

Cooper Andrzejewski homered for Brighton.

Brighton 12-5, Ann Arbor Pioneer 2-6

Lane Petit and Ryan Metz homered in the first game for Brighton (8-4-1), with Metz driving in four runs. Petit homered and tripled in the second game.

Hartland 7-7, Lakeland 6-2

Brayden Crowe doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game.

Braxton Resky drove in two runs in the nightcap for the Eagles (8-6-1).

Softball

Hartland 12-12, Bay City Western 0-2

Olivia Forrest pitched a six-inning shutout in the first game, allowing five hits and fanning eight.

Skylar Spisz was 4-for-5 and Sadie Malik 3-for-3 in the second game for Hartland (6-3).

Livonia Churchill 11-6, Brighton 3-1

Maggie McKaig homered in the first game for Brighton (5-7).

Grand Ledge Invitational

Howell lost 25-4 to defending state Division 2 champion Gaylord, lost 8-4 to Grand Ledge and won 9-5 over Battle Creek Harper Creek.

Leighton Scott homered, while Ava Lavery and Brooke Keller each went 3-for-4 against Harper Creek.

Golf

Highest Honor

Brighton finished first out of 20 teams with a 304 at Huron Meadows Metropark, beating runner-up Bloomfield Hills by five shots.

Brighton’s B team was sixth with a 322.

Brighton senior Riley Morton was second by two shots with a 72. Jacob Daavettila was sixth with a 75, Mitchell Stoll and Carson Butler tied for seventh with 76s and Jack Peterson tied for 20th with a 79 for the Bulldogs.

OmniKinetiks Invitational

Hartland finished fifth out of 16 teams with a 325. Hartland’s Brady Betteley finished 10th with a 79. Keller King and Michael Maurin shot 80s for the Eagles.

Tennis

Green and Gold Tournament

Howell finished second out of four teams by one point to Frankenmuth, 16-15. Milford had 14 points and Livonia Franklin nine.

Howell junior Estie Sura won the No. 1 singles championship by winning all three matches by 8-0 scores. Kelly Melby won No. 2 singles and Gabby Lovich No. 3 singles for the Highlanders.
