Prep roundup: Hartland moves into first in KLAA West girls soccer with help from Brighton

Hartland moved into first place in KLAA West girls soccer with a 4-2 victory over Novi.

The Eagles were helped by rival Brighton, which tied Salem, 1-1, to knock the Rocks out of first place.

Hartland is 5-1-0 in the division and 6-1-0 overall, winning six straight games after a season-opening 2-1 loss to Salem on March 21. Salem is 4-0-2 in the division.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead on a goal early in the first half by Addie Frantti and early in the second half by Alyse Daavettila.

Novi rallied to tie the game, 2-2, with 25 minutes remaining on two goals five minutes apart.

Freshman Claire L’Esperance put Hartland back in the lead off an assist from Daavettila with 20 minutes left in the game. Paige Sundman provided an insurance goal seven minutes later.

“Overall, it was kind of an up and down game, but it was good to get the win,” Hartland coach Andrew Kartsounes said.

Olivia Sebestyen scored Brighton’s only goal on a penalty kick.

Golf

Howell 157, Brighton 160

Howell had five of the top seven scores to beat a Brighton team that’s finished third in the last two state Division 1 tournaments.

Howell’s Zach Spencer and Brighton’s Jackson Frelich tied for first with 38s. Rory Sturos of Howell and Riley Morton of Brighton tied for third with 39s. The difference was Luke Downing, Gavin Hill and Alex Pietila of Howell tying for fifth with 40s.

CAAC Red jamboree

Cole Sova of Fowlerville tied for seventh out of 32 golfers with a 45. The Gladiators were fourth out of five teams with a 190.

Baseball

Whitmore Lake 12, Charyl Stockwell 6

Jacob Watts drove in four runs and George Johnson was 3-for-4 for Stockwell (0-3).

Softball

Fowlerville 4, Mason 1

Fowlerville 8, Mason 7

Meadow Browne hit a lead-off homer in the top of the seventh inning to break a 7-7 tie and give Fowlerville (7-2) the sweep.

Tori Briggs was 3-for-3 in the first game with a home run, triple and three RBIs. She also pitched all seven innings, allowing three hits.

Brighton 9, Novi 6

Brighton 6, Novi 3

Brighton has won four in a row after a 1-5 start.

Anna Minnick drove in four runs and Mel Buzo three in the first game, which the Bulldogs won after trailing 6-4 entering the fifth inning.

Belle Sixbery pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four hits and one unearned run, striking out nine. She pitched all seven innings in the nightcap, giving up six hits and fanning six.

Boys track and field

Paul Moore won the 1,600 in 4:23.20 and the 800 in 1:58.75, Jim Rochowiak won the 200 in 23.68 and the 400 in 52.15, and Jensen Burton won the 110 hurdles in 18.31 and the 300 hurdles in 46.79 for Pinckney.

Pinckney’s Colton Spinelli cleared 13 feet, 4 inches to win pole vault.

Brighton 91, Plymouth 46

Brighton junior Sam Meriweather won the long jump with a leap of 20-11, the 200 in 23.09 and was on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams.

Luke Campbell won the 1,600 in 4:25.06 and the 3,200 in 9:45.59 for the Bulldogs.

Novi 77, Hartland 60

Hartland senior Cameron Cheetam lowered his school record in the 100 to 10.71 seconds, eclipsing his mark of 10.97 set in last year’s state meet. He also won the 200 in 22.07.

Northville 100.5, Howell 36.5

Howell junior Romen Williams won high jump with a leap of 6-2 and the 110 hurdles in 16.79.

Girls track and field

Brighton 95, Plymouth 42

Brighton junior Addison Payne won the 400 in 58.96, the 200 in 26.75 and was on the winning 800 and 1,600 relay teams.

Novi 100, Hartland 36

Hartland’s greatest success came in the 1,600, with freshmen Ava Goodman (5:45.99), Olivia Linski (5:48.88) and Anne Yarber (6:06.79) taking the first three places.
