Prayers, vigil set Monday night for Paschal after 1 student killed, 1 wounded in shooting

A prayer service and vigil for Paschal High School and the surrounding community will be held Monday night after one student was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting at a Whataburger near the school on Friday.

The interdenominational service and candlelight vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. at University United Methodist Church, at 2416 W. Berry St., according to a notice on the church’s website and a message from Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Angélica Ramsey to district staff and parents. There will be time for prayer and conversation at the church starting at 3:45 and again after the service, according to the church website.

Paschal junior Zechariah Trevino, 17, was killed in the shooting and his 16-year-old female cousin was injured. Trevino worked as a cook at the Whataburger on West Berry and tried to protect his cousin when at least one teen opened fire outside the restaurant Friday after school, according to his family.

Fort Worth police said Monday that they have identified everyone involved and have arrested two suspects while looking for another. One suspect, 17-year-old Daniel Reed, faces charges of murder and aggravated assault. Police did not name the other suspect in custody because he is younger than 17. Police Chief Neil Noakes has said that at least one of the suspects opened fire after an argument outside the fast food restaurant.

The suspects are not current students at Paschal. police said. A Fort Worth ISD spokesperson said Reed left the school district in 2021.

In her message, Ramsey wrote that additional school security and police officers are at Paschal on Monday along with the district’s trauma counseling team. Ramsey and other district leaders also planned to visit the campus.

“As educators we are troubled by this and other violent tragedies in our society,” Ramsey wrote. “I want to reassure our staff that the safety of our children and staff is our highest priority. Coming together as a community is the only way to find solutions, ensure that students and staff are safe and allow us to continue the important work of education.”
