Update: Power back near Fresno State, PG&E says. Users in Fresno, Clovis still powerless

7:15 a.m.: Fresno State and the surrounding area regained power after being out overnight, sooner than the company estimated, a PG&E outage map showed Wednesday.

Outages throughout Fresno and Clovis remained Wednesday after a night of high winds. Rain was expected later in the day in much of the central San Joaquin Valley.

7 a.m.: Power outages throughout Fresno persisted Wednesday morning after gusty winds the previous evening pushed over trees and power poles, officials said.

More than 1,900 users near Shaw and Cedar avenues around Fresno State lost power around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Pacific Gas and Electric said.

That area was expected to be without power the entire day, with an estimated restoration time of about 3:45 a.m. Thursday.

Other nearby pockets also lost power before 6 a.m. Wednesday and PG&E did not immediately provide an estimate on the length of the outage.

PG&E’s power outage map was riddled Wednesday morning with little green dots, which note an outage of anywhere from one to 49 users without power, and yellow boxes, which means an area of up to 499 customers who lost power.

The National Weather Service in Hanford said wind gusts reached as strong as 54 mph in Fresno on Tuesday.

Winds also were 40 mph in Merced and 55 mph on Pacheco Pass.

The potentially damaging winds were forecast to subside about 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to the service.

The central San Joaquin Valley and much of the foothills north of Bakersfield had a potential for one or two thunderstorms on Wednesday, which could include lightning that may touch the ground and small hail, meteorologists said.

The Clovis Police Department said around 7 p.m. it received over one dozen calls for service regarding trees down in roads and power lines that had been hit by trees, and other public hazards.

Fresno Fire said it has been responding to downed power lines and downed trees, as well as vehicle accidents, throughout Tuesday evening.
