Pounding storms and then what? Miami’s forecast will have you longing for the weekend

If it sounded like a pounding Tchaikovsky “1812 Overture” outside your windows early Tuesday morning, the Miami Symphony Orchestra wasn’t warming up for its coming season with a surprise street concert.

Consider all that boom-boom and rumble to be the overture to the rest of South Florida and the Keys Tuesday.

The National Weather Service forecasts scattered to numerous thunderstorms all day and some of these cloudbursts into the evening could be beastly.

Expect frequent to “excessive lightning,” torrential rainfall, small hail and strong wind gusts over 20 mph, forecasters say.

Waterspouts could come along with some of these storms, particularly over Lake Okeechobee and Gulf waters Tuesday afternoon and evening. Hail is possible, too, and flooding from repeated bands of heavy rainfall is likely.

With the downpours, temperatures will feel a bit less oppressive than they’ve seemed of late — it was only in the upper 70s during morning rush hour — but highs will reach the upper 80s during breaks in the storms.

The weather service in Miami also notes a strong risk of dangerous rip currents along coastal Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County beaches through Wednesday.

Week ahead

After Tuesday’s 70% chance of rain, storms clear out Wednesday, with just a 20% slight chance of storms. Thursday is sunny and pushing 90 degrees.

Friday could see the resumption of rain on a 40% chance and Saturday and Sunday the weather service forecast is 30% with breezy conditions and wind gusts to 20 mph.
