Portage HS scores | May 8: Ravenna junior Robert Melzer wins MAC shot put title

Ravenna junior Robert Melzer had a remarkable performance on the first day of the Metro Athletic Conference Championship, winning the shot put by nearly five feet.

He hit his championship mark of 52-0 with his final preliminary throw, but four of his six throws would have been enough to take the title. Indeed, Melzer also hit a 51-07.75 on his second throw of finals.

Field junior Camden Radeschi earned runner-up honors (47-2) behind Melzer, while teammate Trevor Dixon won the high jump by clearing 6-1. The Falcons sophomore jumper impressed mightily, clearing 5-8, 5-10, 6-0 and 6-1 on his first attempt.

Field impressed in a number of finals Wednesday, with senior Reagan Daugintis taking runner-up honors in the discus (114-2) and Evan Pruszynski, Billy Silk, Lucas Pollard and Sean Silk taking second in the 4x800 with a school-record time of 7:55.21.

Suburban League Championships

Aurora sophomore Isabella Cicero set myriad meet records at the Suburban League Championships, held at Tallmadge High School.

Cicero set a meet (and school) record by crossing the line in 25.56 seconds to win the 200-meter dash. The sophomore also set a meet record with her championship time of 57.90 in the 400. Cicero joined Isabelle Leindecker, Eva Logan and Hannah Salgado in setting a third meet record with their title-winning time of 4:01.46 in the 4x400.

The Aurora girls finished second overall in the Suburban American team standings behind champion Highland while the Greenmen boys finished third behind the Hornets and host Blue Devils, who tied for the title.

Aurora's success on the boys side included freshman Luke McGovern's breakout performance, as he won gold in the 100 with an impressive time of 11.05 and helped the Greenmen set a meet record with their 42.88 championship time in the 4x100.

Other top Aurora performances included Kassidy Fry winning the high jump (5-1) and fellow senior Leo Sesuraj capturing the long jump title (21-2) just ahead of Roosevelt's Jaiden Portis (21-01.50).

The Rough Riders proved their jumping prowess on the girls side as well with sophomore Kaidyn Harris winning the long jump title (17-4). Three of her first four jumps would've been good enough to capture the championship. Harris also won gold in the 100-meter dash (12.51).

Jeremy Rieger provided another highlight for the Rough Riders, winning the league title in the pole vault (13-0). The senior cleared 11-6, 12-0, 12-4 and 12-8 on his first tries before hitting 13-0 on his third and final attempt.

Roosevelt senior Micah Sheller swept the hurdles, capturing gold in the 110 (15.76) and 300 (40.92).

Baseball

Streetsboro 6, Cloverleaf 4

The Rockets scored in each of the final four innings to earn a season sweep of the Colts.

Jasper Atkin earned the win with 2 ⅔ scoreless innings of relief, yielding a single hit. Streetsboro's Brady Long had a team-leading three hits in four at-bats, driving in two runs, while Josh Boldin and Scott Wilson had two hits apiece.

Garfield 10, Chalker 0

The G-Men took quick control with six runs in the top of the first, providing plenty of support for Alex Carter, who tossed a three-hit shutout.

Brandyn Bogucki led Garfield at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Aidan Hill also knocked in two runs and had a double.

Ravenna 10, Cornerstone Christian 0

Jeriah Miller tossed a one-hit shutout for the Ravens, striking out eight against just two walks.

James Evans sparked Ravenna at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles, while Connor Welling tripled, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Bristol 14, Windham 4

The Bombers fell despite Brian King going 2 for 2 and Aiden McMillen notching a 3-RBI double.

Softball

Field 14, Ravenna 0

Olivia Bey celebrated her Senior Night by returning from an injury that has kept her out nearly all season to toss a no-hitter against the Ravens.

Bey also doubled, as did Kailyn Gressman and Jessica Pollard for the Falcons (21-3, 13-0 MAC).

Southeast 13, Garfield 4

Every starter had a hit as the Pirates tallied 15 overall to top the G-Men.

The bottom of the order played a big role in Southeast's biggest rallies. Eight-hitter Bailey Morris and nine-hitter Mya Sutcliffe had back-to-back 0-2 hits to spark a five-run third capped by Ava Stephens' 2-RBI double to left. Similarly, the Pirates' four-run fifth included five straight singles, from five through nine in their batting order.

Sutcliffe went 3 for 4 to lead Southeast while both Morris sisters (Bailey and Lexi), Stephens and Schuller added two hits apiece.

Lizzy Moore (3 for 4) and Juliana Genovese (two doubles) led Garfield at the plate.
