Popular Tex-Mex restaurant to close in Rochester

John's Tex-Mex, a popular casual eatery in the South Wedge, has announced it's closing its doors.

The good news: there's still time to enjoy one of its giant burritos, as its last day of service will be Saturday, June 8, with a party on Sunday, June 9.

Owner John Roth said he decided to close the restaurant in order to make a career change. "It had nothing to do with the space or business or anything like that," he said. "That was all going well.

"I've been mulling it over for awhile and it seemed like the right choice for me."

Roth was 23 years old ― just a year out of college ― when he opened the restaurant in a cozy location at 489 South Ave. in 2006. "It's not the only job I've ever had, but it's by far the longest," he said.

In 2019, he moved the establishment down the street to a larger location at 426 South Ave. The space is lined with windows, and its bright walls are adorned with colorful artwork from local and regional artists.

Roth, who lives in the South Wedge, said he has enjoyed doing business in the neighborhood. "I like being able to walk to work," he said. "It's my favorite neighborhood in the city."

He let the staff know about his decision a few weeks ago. He plans to auction off the restaurant's artwork and plants, and the proceeds will help provide severance pay to staff. He is hoping to give the staff at least a week's cushion as they line up their next place of employment.

The past 18 years have been filled with "highs and lows," he said. "There was a lot of hard work and late nights and long hours."

He said his emotions vary from being glad he won't have to work 16-hour shifts to being sad he won't get to see his customers on a regular basis.

"Very mixed memories and mixed emotions about the whole thing," he said. "Very bittersweet."

Roth plans to continue to operate regular hours: 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Find more information at johnstexmex.com or call (585) 232-5830.
