Known for its signature starry ceiling and killer tacos, a popular Triangle taqueria brand is closing its location near downtown Raleigh.

Gonza Tacos y Tequila announced this week that its Hillsborough Street location will close this weekend after eight years in its most prominent space.

The popular taqueria group will have three remaining locations open in Cary, North Raleigh and Wake Forest.

The first Gonza location opened on Lead Mine Road in 2012. Over the past decade the brand grew into one of the Triangle’s destinations for upscale tacos and a variety of margaritas.

The closing of the Hillsborough Street location will be the second Gonza to shutter since the beginning of the pandemic. In 2020, the Durham Gonza closed in the West Village apartment complex as one of the first restaurant casualties from COVID. The owners said the closing of the Hillsborough Street location is due to staffing difficulties at the restaurant situated near the NC State campus.

“April 27th will be the final night our Hillsborough location will be open for business,” the restaurant posted on its Instagram. “We would like to thank all our loyal patrons, the Bell View partners, and the community for their support! Unfortunately after the pandemic it has been very difficult for us to find personnel for this location to operate.”
