This popular Bellingham beach will be closed for improvements to shoreline, natural habitat

A popular Bellingham beach is closed to the public while improvements are being made to the shoreline area.

Work is scheduled to begin this week at Little Squalicum Beach Park, which is at 2929 Roeder Ave., near Mt. Baker Products. It is expected to take several months to complete, according to a news release from the Port of Bellingham.

The project was organized by the port after securing a $1.5 million grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology. The work is being done by RAW Land Construction of Bellingham.

The project involves removing industrial fill, wood waste and large slabs of broken concrete from the shoreline, according to the news release. This will lead to a larger, more accessible beach while also creating a habitat for forage fish that feed salmon and other species. Native plants and trees will be planted along the back of the new shoreline.
