Greta Gerwig's Barbie film may not be the only success for Mattel and it has been announced that more of their beloved childhood toys are being brought to the big screen.

Released on July 21, Barbie, starring Margot Robbie in the titular role and Ryan Gosling as Ken, has smashed the box office with a mammoth $162 million opening, breaking records as the biggest-ever debut for a movie by a female director.

Now, toy company Mattel is developing a film around another nostalgic toy from our childhood - Polly Pocket.

Speaking to Variety, Mattel Films producer Robbie Brenner confirmed there is a script for the film, which she described as "great". It will be directed by Girls creator Lena Dunham, with Emily in Paris star Lily Collins as Polly herself.

"First of all, they are two of my favorite ladies ever," Brenner said of Dunham and Collins, before speaking about their collaboration on the production.

"It's been an amazing collaboration. Lena is so collaborative and rolls up her sleeves and really likes to roll around in notes and listen. She's incredible. Lily is so smart and so specific and so productorial. It's just been an incredible collaboration, so we are thrilled about it. Hopefully, we'll be making that at some point in the future."

It comes after Gerwig shared an update on a potential sequel to Barbie - one that many fans may find disappointing.

Speaking to The New York Times, the Lady Bird director said: "At this moment, it's all I've got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I'll never have another idea, and everything I've ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn't want to squash anybody else's dream, but for me, at this moment, I'm at totally zero."

She has also responded to the bizarre backlash the film has been met with from conservative filmgoers.

"Certainly, there's a lot of passion," she told the publication when asked what her thoughts were on the film being branded as "woke" and internet personality Ben Shapiro burning a Barbie doll during a 43-minute online rant.

"My hope for the movie is that it's an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren't necessarily serving us as either women or men."

Barbie is in cinemas now.
