Poll: Vote for the Journal's Jan. 8-14 Athletes of the Week
Despite the weather-related rescheduling, there still were plenty of games and events last week, which produced plenty of excellent performances. We’ve got a list of nominees representing track and field, wrestling, swimming, bowling and basketball.
Last week’s Athlete of the Week winner was Highland girls basketball player Samantha Calahan, who received 34,679 votes to win. The junior has been on a scoring tear and she helped the Huskies clinch a playoff berth in Section 9.
Voting will be open until 6 p.m. Friday. This week’s nominees:
Mark Paschal, Red Hook wrestling
He won the 285-pound bracket of the Scarsdale Tournament, going 4-0 and pinning Rye's Thomas Anderson in the first-place match.
Natalie Fox, Millbrook girls basketball
The senior had 21 points, 18 rebounds and tied a career-high with seven blocks, leading the Blazers over Webutuck.

Jake Del Rosario, Arlington swimming
He won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.90) and the 50 freestyle (23.76) against Pelham Memorial last Monday. Del Rosario also won the 100 butterfly in a personal best 1:01.51 to help the Admirals beat Ossining.
Bradley Gatto, Highland wrestling
He went 4-0 and defeated James Nalbone of Bethlehem Central with a 5:20 pin in the first-place match at 116 pounds in the Highland Round Robin tournament.
Gabby Murphy, Marlboro girls basketball
She scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Dukes in a 61-49 win over Roosevelt.
Angelo Battista, Ketcham wrestling
The sophomore went 4-0 and won the 108-pound bracket at the Highland Round Robin tournament. Battista was named Most Outstanding Wrestler and improved to 15-3 this season.
Aidan Ifkovits, New Paltz track and field
He won the weight throw with a toss of 59 feet, 6 inches — finishing eight inches ahead of second place — at the OCIAA Developmental "B" meet at West Point last Saturday.
Alexander Antonelli, Marlboro track and field
The senior took third place with a personal-best and state tournament-qualifying distance of 39 feet, 6 inches in the boys shot put at the OCIAA Developmental "B" meet.
Ivan Ortega, Arlington bowling
He shot a 738 series, including a 269 in Game 1, leading the Admirals in a sweep of Poughkeepsie last Thursday.
Imani Marc, Arlington track and field
She took first in the girls shot put (33 feet, 8 inches) at the Suffern Invitational last Friday.
Simone Pelish, Lourdes girls basketball
She scored 31 points to lead the Warriors in a 68-50 win over Section 2's Shaker.
Nathaniel Johnson, John Jay track and field
The sophomore dominated the boys high jump with a height of 6 feet, 5 inches to take first at the Suffern Invitational at Rockland Community College. He also took third in the long jump (19 feet, 11 inches).
Alexandria North, Lourdes track and field
The Penn State commit won the girls 300 meters (41.23), finishing better than two seconds ahead of second place at the OCIAA Developmental "B" Meet.
Damani DeLoatch, Beacon track and field
The senior won the boys triple jump (43 feet, 9 1/2 inches) at the OCIAA Developmental "B" Meet. He also won the long jump with a personal-best 20 feet, 11 1/2 inches.
Andrew Szostak, Millbrook boys basketball
He had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead the Blazers in a 58-43 win over Mount Academy, dealing the Eagles their first loss of the season.
Josh Johnson, Marlboro swimming
The senior won the 200-yard freestyle in a personal best time of 1:48.05 in a quad meet involving New Paltz, Our Lady of Lourdes and Rhinebeck. Johnson also won the 100 freestyle in a state tournament-qualifying time of 48.19 seconds.
Taisiia Mokii, Red Hook track and field
The sophomore won the girls 1,500-meter race walk in 8:48.60 at the OCIAA Developmental "B" meet.
Edmund Wilson, Red Hook swimming
He won the 50 freestyle (22.75 seconds) and 100 freestyle (50.96) for the Raiders in a win over Cornwall.
